Just did a little research and it seems he was arrested for smuggling stingrays... dead ones.

Couldn't edit my original post~

Now that I read a few different articles, I couldn't find anyhting that actually said anything about stingrays. Just small fish preserved in alcohol. Weather they were "smuggled" illegally or not... Who really knows.

Innocent until proven guilty in my eyes. And I have a feeling that they will never make him appear.

Looking forward to the article, anyone in the US know how to get a PFK. Order online maybe?

actually he was smuggling unknown ( undescribed) species for biotech, clearly against all international laws. How he was smuggling was a joke, but he had been warned by many people not to do this, including the authorities, who had been watching him for over a year. He also never showed up for his trial.
So...how would you feel if some publisher ( NOT a scientist, has no degree nor university affiliation) came to your country , helped himself to your countries' biodiversity, perhaps a rare and new-to-science species, without any permission nor any proper study, and smuggled it to a different country to exploit, so that your country gets nothing from exploitation of its own natural resource.

I sent PFK a email to see if they would like to comment on this but no reply yet

From what I read, they never even inspected the fish to see what they were? And what do you mean by exploit? If it was a new species, the Brazilian authorities would probably never gain anything from it, until someone like Mr. Bleher comes along and describes it and it becomes a marketable/ profitable recource (as he has done with many fish native to the Amazonia region).

I was unaware he missed his trial date, and have no comment about that.

if i went to jail in another country and had to go back for trial i wouldnt be going back either lol. especially after he said it was the worst place he has ever seen. and how is he exploiting them whenever he is putting them into classification and making it public. he is not saying its coming from a different country. so if he came to the usa took some fish did all of the tests then classified them i wouldnt mind one bit. in fact we need someone to do more work on stingrays.

plus you dont have to go to a university to know your stuff. there are lots of things im good at or know i could be good at without the schooling. some of the best minds of the world did not go to college so that does not change my mind about him one bit.

Yes, he is very well versed on aquatic organisms, college or not. Not to mention he owns the largest aquatic refrence library in the world. So if he doesn't know it, he can look it up.

This by no means makes breaking laws ok, and IF he did, he should be penalized just like anyone else. I have still yet to see any of the actual charges he faced or might be facing, just opinionated blogs and internet forums. It doesn't help that I don't speak any of the languages these articles are written/published in, but that doesn't really matter. I am just like everyone else, and opinionated on looker who really has no idea what really went on.

Come on, lets be sensible here - it would be sooo easy for any legitimate person to get in trouble in Brazil for silly reasons, My Indian friend was detained in Cuba by the govt for trying to "Escape" he is obviously not from Cuba and was there on holiday - it does NOT mean he was criminal or trying to escape.

If you get the slightest bit of paperwork wrong and a jobsworth takes exception and you speak the language poorly then you could end up in court or arrested even if the authorities are just after a bribe.

My Dad worked for the Institute of Ocenaography funded by the National Environment Research Council but he was always getting arrested or some form of trouble when abroad, just cos the authorities could not speak to each other.
