Stingray Symposium update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hate I missed it (stupid knee surgery!). I intended to gain a wealth of info at the symposium...Good thing all of you guys/girls went. Wish I had MFK in my life years ago...wouldn't have lost so many fish. Looking forward to the video and further re-hashing of topics discussed at the event! Would've loved to have met Frank, who got me in contact with Mike, where I met Li at his place and was introduced to MFK. My ray keeping and fish keeping all together has greatly benefited from MFK. Thanks a mil everyone!!!

Sorry for the long mushiness!:grinno:

I touched base on parental care a while back.. one of Patricia's PDFs found on the internet (reproduction of potamotrygon) has a short blurb about parental care.

This was an incredible event. Glad I went and met everyone and learned tons of new stuff. There are some very cool looking orbiygni's in the upper Tocantins river that I would like to own. My "true Histrix" and what everyone and their mother calls true histrix, aren't histrix at all. They are an undescribed species from the Rio Negro that have yet to be labeled. True histrix that fit the original description come from somewhere else and are a pale color with tiny specs all over it. Tried to find the picture but couldn't find it. Everyone was pretty cool.

Parental care was first time reported from Lucia Araujo at the American Elasmobranch Society 1998 Annual Meeting. She did research on the cf. histrix (cururu, sp. C) in Rio Itu, a tributary of Rio Negro.

Yes, the histrix "story" is very confusing ... It made me a lough when I read the description of histrix in Müller & Henle 1841 and they stated that all the collected rays had broken tails. So all rays with broken tails in these days were histrix. The description of P. motoro in the same work includes a specimen with broken tail and they discuss whether this is a histrix or all histrix are motoro, because of the broken tails.

Any info if the new description of the Rio Negro cf. histrix is on the way? Ten years ago I was told the proposed new name for these rays (Potamotrygon t......i) and nothing happened since then.

I did talk to Patricia and Gertulio about this and the guy "Rosa" who is supposedly working on describing it is very slow. They said it should only take a year to do it because the body shape and coloring is unmistakable and the species only comes from the Rio Negro. But this Rosa guy is very slow they said. One could officially describe it besides him..... Perhaps I will if this guy doesn't get with the program!!!
They do have very short tails. Even my pups that were born have very short tails. It seems to appear that my adults have the full tail still by looking at the pups.

Okay Glad everyone can concur with what Rayman and I were already talking about..

"True" Histrix have a holotype from southern Argentina..

the hobbyist 'True' Histrix is actually Potamotrygon cf. Histrix or Potamotrygon sp. "C" or the "Cururu Ray".. from the Rio Negro.

Man it will be hard enough to get away from the Rio Negro Histrix, etc.. with the stupid Peru false Histrix and a bunch of lackluster exporters just naming rays whatever their finger lands on in an outdated reference book.

I think its time for a new P# book!

Wow good stuff on the tiger.. sounds like alot was shared.
