If in doubt, culture your own - red wigglers are super easy.

Just like any live food it's a question of source. Unless you necropsy the ray there is no way to tell what killed it. There are a couple of ways a live and apparently healthy earthworm can kill a raw. The first is embedded particulate on the worm, Small shards of glass or plastic adhered or partly penetrating the worm can do it. Though only inflicting a superficial scratch on the worm. Annelids will have a different poison tolerance than rays as well given that they evolved on different continents.

Both of these problems are avoided by using a reliable source. Same goes with any pet food.

How do you know you lost your rays or fish to worms you guys.maybe that's what your excuse is.if their was something I'n a worm that could kill a ray the worm would for sure not be alive.maybe if you fed a rotten week old dead worm than maybe but still probably not even than.I contacted a few worm farmers looking for a source of worms .I also did ask all that I talked too and they all told me the exact same thing.if it can kill a fish it would be impossible for a worm to survive.they absorb stuff out of dirt. Their is no myth a live worm that is healthy can and won't kill anything

I've feed my previous rays with NC with no issues. I feed my Fire Eels with NC and have yet to come across any issue.

I recent came across a hobbyist who fed NC only to his eel, and to be frank with you, his eel looks really good!

ive been feeding earthworms since i first started keeping rays

i am now up to about 500 earthworms per week

never had any problems

Thanks for all the replies guys, just trying to figure this thing out. And for the record, no one is trying to misattribute or misrepresent anything. Simply stated said that was what I 'believed' to be the source of the problem, ex. why one ray dies in a tank of 4 rays and all others are healthy.. Also one reputable seller I know swears by the 'fact' that NC will kill rays. Thanks everyone else for constructive comments

Trev, is it from the same supplier you gave me? Thanks for that info again btw :)

i think worms are probably the safest thing you can feed. I think that people need something to blame when there fish dies, so why not blame the food?

I also feed night crawlers to my rays! Never have I had a problem. They LOVE them. Also make for a great food source on rainy days! I can get dozens in a minutes time!

when i first starting keeping rays 7 years ago worms used to be cheaper than shrimp.now they are very expensive and not worth buying.my first rays were grown up exclusivley on worms with out issues.

dont ever take worms from your yard or street and drop into your tanks.in canada they sray pestisides all over the place ,these wont kill the worms instant but probably absorb into the skin than into your tank.

so just because worms are safe, please nobody on here go and catch them from your yard and feed them to your aquarium very bad idea.worms from worm farms are feed bread and newspaper very aquarium frendly stuff.out side your home their is fertilizers and oil from old clunker cars

Obviously you dont do this on public property. You only do this if you have an enclosed yard and know exactly whats going into it. I've been plucking worms out of my backyard ever since I can remember and have yet to see any problems. Theres also that pesticides ban that came into effect since 2009, so I dont see how pesticides are a problem if you're smart on where you pick them from.
