Stingrays and Nightcrawlers myth

I have fed worms from my yard as well as worms from Walmart without any issues.

Been feeding earthworms as part of rays diet for over 2 years and have yet to have an issue.

I have fed ONLY NC to my male hystrix for about a year, and he has growm from 6 inches to 12 inches in 12 months.......I also feed a large jardini with NC several times per week.....NO PROBLEMS!?

I have bought/fed night crawlers from Walmart before without any problems. Have also fed red wrigglers, but found them to have a distinct odor and my current rays (hystrix) aren't really excited about them. I now have and feed European night crawlers. My rays really like these worms and I am feeding them more often. I bought the worms from Uncle Jim's Worm Farm. I did ask what media the worms are grown in- peat moss. It is more cost effective to buy large quantities of worms from a vendor vs the local Walmart.

Yeah there's no doubt that rays love night crawlers. My fish ate them on a regular basis for about a year before the death occured. I really think it was a bad worm that killed my fish. For those that still use NC's as food, I suggest that you put them through the wringer before feeding them to your fish. Just put the worm on a hard surface and use a pen or pencil and roll them across length wise to remove their gut's contents. Just my 2 bits...

My male motoro (6 inch disk) loves 2 inch chunks of nightcrawlers (I chop them up for him). He also absolutely loves red wrigglers and live blackworms. Only had problems with nightcrawlers killing fish when I collected them from my driveway and they wiped out a tank silver dollars and my synodontis. I now buy all my worms at the store. My NC are Walt's Crawlers as well BTW, and I would swear by them as a ray food.

I have been feeding NC to freshwater stingrays for 20 years. It was the only food item rays would initially take when shipping was a lot more primitive and traumatic on the fish. Recovery times were lengthier and rays were harder to acclimate. I have bought them from worm farms, bait shops and walmart and never had a problem. They are a reliable source of nutrients and even the most reluctant rays will eat them as long as they are initially chopped thin. As the ray gets used to this food source the worms can be chopped in longer lengths.
