Backfromthedead Backfromthedead - I'm not sure I'm convinced yet that I'd like them. Haven't seen many but the vulture cats I see on google look a little plain to me...

Jexnell Jexnell - Reminds me of a striped raph a bit.... 12" lil small. 😄

J Joshuakahan - any pics of yours? They have that basic old silver/grey (IMO) boring look...

I'm leaning towards possibly a tigrinus cat? I always knew them as zebra shovelnose. Not sure I'm using right terminology. They get larger, and are really flashy.

They are a metallic silver with gold highlights, tigrinus are definitely cool. Just depends what you like

I mentioned them cause in your tank you could get a nice sized group of them. They act like large economy versions of Pictus cats. Or could go with another group catfish the Lima Shovelnose (Sorubim lima) They are another 12in catfish. They typically hover mid-tank unless hunting. They really attack the food when feeding.

Possibly get a group of both?

Hi Jon,

Sorry, haven't had time to chime in much. As I understood it, you are getting a 560 gal 8x4x2.5ft and the existing stock is
- CK ~20"
- Oscar ~12"
- Fire Eel ~30"
- Florida gar ~12"
- Kelberi P.Bass ~8"
- red Shoulder Sev Sp Hero
and you are asking what we, each of us personally, would keep in such a 560 gal tank to get some ideas for yourself, right?

Plus you'd like to know what kind of active catfish could go in there.

It's hard to wrap my thoughts around it, the field is way too wide :) Can start from a group of shoaling fish, a group of non shoaling fish, both can be smaller or medium size, nothing over 1ft, or a solo fish, or same size or larger centerpiece with addenda (for color, for movement, for balance, for grace, for interaction, for dithers, for ferocity, for fear, for giggles, for your gf, for your cat-non-fish, etc.).

I like some of the abovementioned suggestions and other fish related to them.

In no particular order, what I'd consider / what I kept or keep (what I can think of on the fly in 10 min):

- apurensis catfish
- wyckii catfish
- golden dorado group
- VATF but not possible in FL
- bolt catfish
- vulture catfish group
- datnoides perch group
- chinese, korean perch
- LM bass, SM bass, crappie, bluegill
- pbass group
- bowfin
- walking catfish
- silver dollar school
- banded leporinus group
- rose mahseer group
- blue mahseer group
- pleco collection
- afer knife
- african arowana
- aussie arowana
- lungfish
- 100 rope fish
- 100 pictus catfish
- 50 mascara barb
- 100 roseline sharks

J Joshuakahan - Sorry for the late response. Been really busy lately with getting that tank, work issues, and Easter coming up. So the catfish you showed there. I don't really like his look... The one's I really am into personally, not just catfish but most fish, are like the one's that when people see them they're like "WHOA!" like the what's that I've never seen a fish that looks like that wow factor you know? They kind of look like what I picture a catfish to look like, lol. I know this is obviously just different opinions, I'm personally just not digging that one's look or size. I'm kind of into the bigger the better too. But not always. Like I have a red shoulder severum sp. hero, and 4 geo sveni growing out, but they have that WOW factor when full grown for me. Their colors and the flowing fins are like, WOW their crazy nice looking.

Jexnell Jexnell - They're kinda interesting. They remind me of the tigrinus shape for sure. Just smaller. So here's a thing. I've never had much luck with catfish so I think committing to a large shoal isn't the best idea! Lol. I LOVE shoaling fish, and large shoals, but since I haven't had a catfish I've settled for and been happy with I don't think multiples at the same time is a good idea you know? lol. I do have a striped raph catfish, and he's so boring I'm gonna see if the people that are rehoming my male Jag would like him. He's neat looking, but you literally never see him. I swear he doesn't even come out at night!

thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter - Hey Viktor! Yep, That's exactly what I'm asking. So my current stock as you can see from my few videos really is active and gets along great, and I love that. I want to go for like a community busy tank, but everyone getting along, large fish, with that "wow" factor. Like "whoa, what is that I've never seen a fish like that" kind of vibe you know? That's one of the reason's the tigrinus looks so cool to me, I think he looks so different and colorful. I think TSN look dope but that's obviously out of the question haha.

Oh my I can't wait to dig threw this list!

- apurensis catfish - he's kinda ugly no? lol reminds me of a giant gourami if it were a catfish. do these guys not get like huge tho?
- wyckii catfish - he's neat. kinda reminds me of a gulper catfish?
- golden dorado group - Whoa! That thing looks way cool. But from a quick google search that looks like it may get too big even for my newest tank?...
- VATF but not possible in FL - Looks neat, but also looks like it'd be kinda nasty which doesn't fit my tank vibes. Plus, you said it's a no in FL.
- bolt catfish - eh, he looks okay. i read aggressive, and smaller in size? those two things combined are kinda opposite of what I like.
- vulture catfish group - still strongly considering this one. I think they look pretty neat.
- datnoides perch group - Is a darnoid "perch" same as like the tiger fish datnoid? I've always wanted one of these and lost interest over time. They seemed pretty exclusive as far as obtaining, then I read they may even be brackish?.... Then I read they're very sensitive to water perimeters and grow very slow, and the more I read the more I became less interested because of those facts. But if those aren't all true, i really, really, really like the look of the datnoid fish. Assuming the "perch" are the same ones I'm thinking of big, yellow with vertical black bars.
- chinese, korean perch - he's definitely unique looking... lol. looks a little too odd for my taste.
- LM bass, SM bass, crappie, bluegill - aren't these like native to our area and ppl fish them for food?....
- pbass group - I could definitely grab some more P bass... I currently just have the 24k spider kelberi whom is awesome. Any specific p bass ud suggest looking at?
- bowfin - those look very cool, and im interested, but are they aggressive like im reading on google?
- walking catfish - oof, lol. nah.
- silver dollar school - I'm still seriously considering this, but I could also totally do this in the 240 with a single show stopper. So I had a large school of SD cause they were one of my all time fav schooling fish for a long time. unfortunately I learned about velvet fish disease when they came to their untimely demise, and it left such a bad taste in my mouth I thought I may never keep SD. ;(
- banded leporinus group - I know of these ones well, and like them! However they're super crazy and active like Tinfoils, and ime they'll ruin my current crews vibes with their crazy active darting around.
- rose mahseer group - they look huge on google? like huge too huge for my tank.
- blue mahseer group - these look pretty neat! they remind me of a tinfoil. cyprinids is tinfoil family right? are they crazy active dart around all the time tho like tinfoils?
- pleco collection - not into em at all.
- afer knife - interesting. Looks kinda neat but I think I read somewhere multiple knife fish can result in issues with them not getting along? Plus he looks neat, but I'm not that into him visually.
- african arowana - Interesting. I expected to see an arowana looking fish top column. have you ever kept? how are they as far as how they act and interact?
- aussie arowana - is this the same as a jardini? I figure if I did get an aro may as well go for a big boy silver no?
- lungfish - are these the fish I see in all those videos on IG from like oriental geographic locations? I don't know anything about these guys. are they just like keeping any other aquarium fish? I mean don't think have other conditions they need cause they like breath air or am I thinking of something else?
- 100 rope fish - I actually kinda like that. But 100, lol. What about a little group. are they schoolers? peaceful?
- 100 pictus catfish - that just sounds like peacock bass, oscar food. lol.
- 50 mascara barb - I really like those!! But again, they sound like p bass, oscar food. they definitely wouldn't not get eaten.
- 100 roseline sharks - those are really nice looking too! Would just end up as food.

Those were some great suggestions. Appreciate that! The rope fish is something I wanna look at more. and I think maybe I need to read about datnoids more. Btw on a totally separate note, when I picked up the new tank I met a couple that bought a 240g from the same guy and upgraded their 180 to 240, and they're gonna take Dahmer and let him have the 180g for himself with either a school of dither fish, or they may try a female jag with! We still have the hotel tho so still may take the trip. We'll see.

As far as cats go you may also want to take a look at giraffe cats. Good sized mouth on 'em but they don't seem interested in eating other fish w/ it. I've got four of them in an 800g and each are roughly 2' long. They don't have the wow factor in the way that some fish do as they're not flashy but with a Peace River gravel bottom it's surprising how well a 2' long 5# fish will blend and anyone that walks up and looks at it doesn't notice them for a moment. Then comes the wow.

They also vacuum the tank every night. They suck up the gravel and blow it out through their gills and every morning the tank bottom is covered in divots that are different from the ones that were there yesterday.

For a cat that to my eye looks different it would be the ripsaw. Comparatively they're a little more reclusive and inclined to get a bit bigger than a giraffe. The mottled brown are a little more interesting to look at than the flat gray jobs. Wiki says the color pattern fades w/ age but I haven't found that to be it exactly. They seem to fade to a dull brown and then when they're excited (like feeding time) their pattern will appear very vividly and later when the fish chills out the pattern fades again.

Granulated cats, ripsaws and other giant armored cats might be a good option too
There’s also many synodontis that get huge

Trouser Cough Trouser Cough - I think you got my number. I just googled the Giraffe Cat, and I like what I see! The Ripsaw looks awesome too, but from the google images it kinda seems too big for my tank? Would the Giraffe outgrow my tank you think? I know we all say this, but I'm REALLY not getting another tank! lol.

J Joshuakahan - Oh those ripsaw and armored cats very much interest me!!! Like I mentioned above, I see some of those google images and think they may be too big for my tank tho?

Okay so how bout this, if yall had to pick a tigrinus or giraffe, which and why? I feel like you guys have a good idea of what I am looking for and like. Any suggestions on non cats? The last few I looked at are very much peaking my interest so I'm curious which of the two I asked previously you'd pick.

I like the look of the ripsaw for sure but I've seen them get pretty beefy and a 3' fish in a 6' tank is approaching maximum density in my book.

The giraffe will usually tap out somewhere around 2' in an aquarium but they're social so you'd probably want to get at least a couple of them. I have four and they roughhouse and occasionally get scuffed up but they aren't biters. I think of them a little like a bigger version of a clown loach and once you've seen them pump huge amounts of light gauge gravel continuously through their gills you will be surprised that it's possible and you'll want to see it again.

I don't know exactly how to articulate it but I also like the surprise factor. Several people have stood in front of that tank and not noticed the giraffes for a minute or so and were startled when they saw the fish swim off. One church lady type even said something that startled me a little. I like that.

I’d go with a tigrinus over a giraffe, but both are sweet. For non catfish, one of my favorites are odoe pikes
I’m not sure but I believe granulosus cats don’t get as big as ripsaw and grow fairly slow. I had one a while back and it grew fast to 8” and then slowed a lot
