Stock Discussion

IDK anything about geophagus, never had them. They are taller cichlid but it seems they top out around 6 inches. I'd think knife fish, pbass (as it grows), and gar (as it grows) will try to prey on them sooner or later. Same may happen with the severum.

I think gcats are a good candidate.

Multiply (outside length minus 2x side wall thickness) times (outside width minus 2x front and back wall thickness) times (outside height minus bottom pane thickness), then convert cubic inches or cubic feet into gallons.
+1 on the geos not being the best for those tank mates

thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter J Joshuakahan - So the Sveni definitely get larger than 6". One of the local fish farms near me (Imperial Tropics) has a shoal of them in one of his 600g islands and they are LARGE. I'm not worried about them with my current fish stock in the least. My Clown Knife is the most peaceful fish in the entire tank and has never shown remote interest in live feeding. Any of the three could have tried the severum at his size and never have. The Jag I just rehomed was the smallest fish in the tank when I initially moved him over (much smaller than the severum is currently), and none of my stock tried him at his small size. So IMO I have a very good idea of the temperament of my current fish and I'm not worried about what I currently have.

So I'm heavily leaning towards a single giraffe nose cat. Too bad you don't wanna part with one of your beaut's Viktor! 😝 Anyone have any suggestions on a reputable vendor around FL that has some in stock? I may speed up the tank process. I was originally gonna wait for the guy that built it to come help, but frankly the more I think about it the more I think I may just plumb it myself in the near future. Provided I find the time away from work!

Glad to be wrong and to hear on the non-predatory prospects.

I replied to your email about the g-cats. I guess it wasn't delivered or you missed it. We have a few available but they are hardly affordable unfortunately at the moment.

They do usually get bigger than 6”, but comparing the ones in imperials pond/lake to an aquarium doesn’t really work since they’ll get larger in those conditions. But the real issue is the geos are gonna grow much slower than the other fish and geos are not very good at defending themselves either. But you never know, maybe it will work, hope it does.

thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter - Well I wouldn't say it's about right or wrong. IME I've had fish that you will read online "ARE AGGRESSIVE" and they simply turn out not to be, and vice versa. Like that jag, YUP, he turned out pretty aggro like I read, lol. But I don't think it's as black and white as they always will or won't be based on species. If that makes sense.... So let's get back to the stock ideas!!! Oh, and I did see your email! As you already mentioned, they're pretty pricey and I don't plan on spending that much on a fish! I'll try to find a smaller one from a vendor and grow him out. I totally understand the price though. It's not a rehome fish, it's one of your personal fish. heck, I wouldn't sell my CK for 1k bucks cash right now.

J Joshuakahan - How does comparing the one's in Imperial Tropics 600g island that's the exact same blueprints and design as my tank, just a few inches taller, not work? I never said anything about any pond or lake.... And I don't see the "real issue." of the fish growing slower since I've already also mentioned they're growing out in a separate tank so not sure why their growth rate would have anything to do with said scenario?

For the sake of not derailing my thread into a silly argument let's just leave it at this. I appreciate your opinion on large geo's becoming prey in a large tank with my current stock, and it's due noted. I feel like I know a thing of two about each individual fish's temperament since I've interacted with them on a daily basis as they've grown and disagree with your anticipated outcome. That being said I will 100% be the first person to hop right on here if it doesn't work out 6-12 months down the road when I introduce them all and say "yo, you ended up being right!," and figuring something else out like moving the geo's to the 240. :)

So, let's move onto more suggestions. So far my big take away from this thread (besides basic math hah) is I think I'm nearly 100% getting a giraffe catfish for the 560. Any other fun suggestions? I like the Dat idea but I heard they grow really, really slow and I don't like that very much.

There are 5 different Auchenoglanis g-cats in the trade (I have a review on them on YT and on our thread here), and there are other g-cats too, especially Parauchenoglanis that grow to 1.5ft. I wonder which species / kind you have in mind and if you don't, which one(s) you'd pick.

***

So here is the current stock of the prospective 560:

-clown knife (about 2-2.5')
-fire eel (about 2.5')
-24k spider kelberi peacock bass (roughly 9-10")
-red shoulder severum sp hero (roughly 6-7" alrdy in with the big boys)
-spotted florida gar (maybe 12" or so)
-4x geophagus sveni (currently growing out in a 55)

You had said first you wanted an "active" catfish, which usually means a swimmer, but since you were considering tigrinus, you are probably now including "non-hiding" into the scope too, right? The thing is, given furniture and some aggression from tank mates, tigs can hide too, not in the raphael catfish total disappearance fashion, but still.

And this is not all about a catfish, or is it?

And that fish must be 1.5ft-2ft size.

It must be at peace with all those tank mates.

Are you looking to add just one more big fish / catfish, or more fish?

Anything else? It might help if you reiterated all the conditions one more time, before I, for one, go back and look through what already been offered and think of anything more.

thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter - Honestly I didn't know there were multiple different kinds! The one that caught my eye are the kind that were in your large tank.

So when I say active, yes, swimming is cool but not necessary, I guess more what I meant was non hiding! Honestly the more I hear about tigrinus being semi aggressive the less appealing they are to me. They're fricken gorgeous, but at this pt from what I've heard from the g cats, and then tigris, size, looks, aggression, I'd pick the g cat.

It is not all about a cat. I am 100% open to any and all other suggestions. I just figured I'd give a cat a try since I failed once with the striped raph. Don't get me wrong, I still have him, and he still remains the most boring fish in the world. I'm not looking for just one fish. With the upgrade I'm aware I have much more room and am considering all options. In a nutshell, I have more room, looking into more fish.
