Hey gang. Time has arrived to stock the new (to me) fish tank.
I am going to use crushed oyster shells for substrate. Anyone ever try this?

Ok, the way I am looking to go with this tank are mostly Malawi haps and maybe a couple of big boys thrown in. Like a polystigma. I also have about a 4.5" Front I am going to move in there. Other possibilities for the move from my 75 gallon are a yellow lab and a hongi. I know Mike frowns on this sort of mix. I also have never had a full grown Front, so I have no idea how predatory they are. Nor am I familiar with the predation exhibited by large haps like polystigmas. My thinking is that anything 5-6" will not be at risk, but I am looking for input here.
I want an all male tank.

I am going to use the 75 as a grow out tank. Currently in "grow out phase are a sci. fryeri, hap ruby, hippo point blue bar, strawberry peacock, cop azeurus, aul.mozambique, couple of synodontis, prot spilinotus. All are eligible for the larger tank once grown. Thoughts? Input? Thaks.
Help!!!

One last thing. If you are somewhere in south texas and wish to unload some Africans, please let me know!

all male tank??! dont do it i tried that before you wont enjoy your tank they fight all day long,,,, as far as Frontosa's they are my all-time favorites i have about 15 of them, they are not very aggressive,here is picture of my girl,love of my life next to my boys....:D

Not necessarily. you have to remove and put troublemakers in timeout. Another tip is to put different looking fish together so theres no conspecific competition and they can all let their colors shine. The whole reason males would fight is over girls/breeding. Frontosa are social fish, they need other Fronts in the tank to be comfortable. Im not saying a single Front cant be kept but in order to thrive you want them to be comfortable. Check out my all male vid in my sig.

Verrrrrry nice!!!! i like it how long did it take to find the males to get-along so well, i tried once, MAN!!! they fought all the time this about two years ago and never tied again,,,give some pointers please,I've had Africans over 20 years i am still learning.thanks!

-crowd them in
-dont hesitate to remove trouble makers
-put trouble makers in timeout then try them again, often the heirarchy in the tank changes and sometimes not always he will play nice.
-it helps to grow them out together. I grew alot of them out from 4 inches in my 75G
-keep them well fed
-temp around 78F
-when growing them out have big rocks to break the line of sight
-I add fish in pairs(same type) , they keep each other occupied and other fish seem to let them sort things out on their own.


Since that video was made I have removed and added other fish. Having an all male tank is a whole different ball game in a 6 footer. Fish getting chased have a better chance to get away thus saving fins and noone gets too stressed/sick.

-Most Aulonocara's will work too

how big were your cichlid's when you guys stared, i started with 5'' do you thing that is why,
