Stocking for 90G South American Aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay. I really wanted to keep a small group of Geos. I was even thinking about omitting the EBAs for the Geos to make the tank less crowded. I couldn't go beyond 4 feet tank in my apartment. I think I have to reconsider about them.

Many of the Gymnogeophagus are smaller, and would work well in a 90 gal.
They will require a bit of a winter cool down, and the denosoni barbs would work in that environment, because they also appreciate cooler temps.
Here are a few I've kept. I kept them without heaters)

Above Gtmnogeophagus gymnogenys Rio Yesrbalito, males are the most colorful, and high profile.
Below Gymnogeophagis sp. Paso Pache, again females are smaller and less colorful

I have kept all the above will cool and temperate water cory's like C erhardti, and Uruguayan and Argentine tetras , like Buenos Aires tetras.

I think geos can be kept with the said species, however I agree on the fact that you would need a 6ft tank. I had my red head tapajo in a 3 or 4 foot long tank and he was a big bully. Now upgraded into my 150 he is a lot more peaceful. I should also add that in the 150 there is quite a bit more flow.
I don't have sufficient space for a 6 feet tank. Currently I am planing for a 100 gallon tank (4.5' L / 2' H / 1.5' W) in place of 90. 4.5 feet is the max size I can go for.

I'll decide on the Geophagus and EBA Later. For now, I will keep the 4 Albino Heckeliis (approx 3 inches now) with 5 Altums and 6-8 Denisoni Barbs in the 4.5 feet tank. After few months when the Heckeliis will attain a size of 4.5-5 inches, I will keep one and sell off others. At that point I'll add 1-2 EBAs and if possible, a small species of Geos.

Does the albino variant (being tank bred) of thread-fin acara also shows same levels of con-specific aggression as the regular ones? They behave like best buddies currently in my 3 feet grow out tank.

Another thing I am curious about, if geos can be kept in smaller numbers like 2-3 individuals.

I will look into these species and will check if they are available here. Most of the SA cichlids available in India come from local fish farms. There are only a few reputed importers and breeders in each city who sell fishes of good blood line. So, the availability of SA cichlids is a big issue here except for Discus and Angelfish.
