a 3 foot tank is too small for an oscar.

True, it will never reach its potential size and will die from high nitrate levels more than likely!!!

atlast, i have given away my oscar, and exchanged it for african cichlids, blue peacock and blue dolphins. now its a african tank....

I had 3 Oscars years ago in a 3' tank they lived ~10 years and the biggest one was close to 14" the other two were 12" I was in high school then and never tested my water on the tank and did a 20% water change each week is all. not saying it's the best thing for the fish but there is the possibility they can live in that and grow to being a full size O. I also had a rather large Pleco in the tank with them he was 15 years old when I got rid of him.

Not being cheeky or anything here but you must have been doing water changes like every other day to keep the tank healthy?! If you had 3 foot long fish in a 3 ft tank, did you not think or cop that, that was ridiculously small???? Tbh, i cant see that happening for any1 unless there not feeding there O's there correct daily diet or are performing w/c's every single day! Nitrates would be trough the roof and id bet atleast one of your O's suffered from HITH?!

I agree with Steveo1987-hard to believe that your Oscars could reach 14 inches in a 3 foot tank-it must of atleast been 2 feet wide-right? And let me also add that just cause it "supposedly" worked for one person doesn't make it the norm and I would never suggest for anyone to try to put a fish that produces that much waste and gets that large in a 3 foot tank. BTW-most 3 foot tanks are around 10 inches wide.

nope I really didn't do anything other than a 20% change each week. I was young (in high school) and didn't have any knowledge of fish or how big they got back then. Being a kid making minimum wage and mom & dad wouldn't buy anything for the fish for me I was lucky to have a 30 gallon long for them. I had them from early 1992 and they died in late 2002 by that point I had them and the pleco in a 90 gallon tank. I NEVER tested my water on any tank I had back then. But the O's were very active and ate like horses.

pics to show you their size. that's an emperor 280 and a magnum 250 for filters for size reference.

I had an Oscar and a JD and a pleco in a 20gal I was inexperianced at the time and thought I would have a bigger tank before they grew up. I was wrong and ended up doing 20% daily water changes if I skiped more than one day my nitrates would be to high. They are now happy in their new 75gal and I added a GT 3in and yes I plan to upgrade to a 5ft 120gal soon. I do a 10% water change 5 days a week and my nitates are near 0 I like the smaller water changes because they are better for the fish and make water changes less of a chore.

I have a male Salvini with my two Oscars and they get along great. I did put them in as juvies and territory issues are non existent for now.
