Stocking help for 3 tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would not recommend housing HRPs with cories... Just my experience, but my HRP male systematically killed off 6 rabouti cories in a matter of 2 weeks. I believe it's because they both inhabit the bottom portion of the tank, so the HRPs can sometimes see them as intruding on their territory.

While HRPs are generally more mellow than cons, my 4.5" HRP male in my 75 is an absolute brute and bosses around my 9" oscar. Each fish has its own personality basically. Good luck!

Really? I had read so much about how they were fine with most all bottom dwellers including cories. Well I am going to order like 16 of the sterbai cories, but I can always rehome them to the other 55 and have them all in there (would be a giant Cory colony) or some can go to the 125. Thanks for the feedback. Will definitely have to keep an eye on that. :)

Reading about the HRP can be a bit confusing because there is the convict/HRP hybrid.

Is that a HRP in your profile picture?

Yes there is quite a bit of confusion about them, I bought mine as an F2 from Cavamart (Rio Danli). That is him in my profile picture when he was very young and in breeding dress.

Right after I got him (fish #4 of 5)

So I think I am leaning towards idea #1. I have a few questions about these setups though.

If I keep the severums with the keyholes, there is a chance the keyholes will become quite timid. Would I have room to add dither fish to the tank with the severums, keyholes and geos all taking up bioload space? And should I add cories to the 125 or would it be redundant to add more sand sifters when I will already have 6 large sifters?

Is there a good dither fish native to the waters Honduran red points inhabit that would make them feel comfortable enough to breed?

Are cories a good idea with breeding angelfish? I intend to have several tall broad leaf fake plants in their tank to lay eggs on as well as some shale or tall flower pots. Will the angels be able to defend their eggs from 8 cories?

Idea #1:
-125:
2 turquoise severum *
4 keyhole cichlids *
6 geopahgus red head tapajos
1 spotted hi fin pleco *

-55:
4-6 honduran red points (will remove two if I end up with 2 breeding pairs)
Want dithers

-55:
6 angelfish (2 breeding pairs and a couple singles/can remove the singles if things get too tense) *
8 sterbai Cory catfish (considering removing if a threat to angel eggs)

If your goal is to raise the angel fry...keep each pair in a 20. Otherwise you will have too much aggression and probably eating of the fry. Put them each in a 20 and let them parent raise for a couple weeks!

That is indeed the goal. It might be better to just have 1 breeding pair since I don't want to overflow with angels. I will eventually (either with this batch or the next) have a pair of breeding severum. If I don't get a pair from my 4 juvenile turquoise severums, I will be getting 6 notatus severums and try for a pair with them. I don't want to have too many batches of different fry growing all over the place. I was thinking about have 4 20s (1 for spawning angels, 1 to move the male or female angel one tank over so the female doesn't get worn out, 1 for raising baby angels and one for raising baby severums). This way I could control how many batches of fry I am dealing with at once.
