Stocking Options?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I could also wait a few months with the Oscar and then redecorate the 75g when I add him in also to reestablish territory, no?

I picked up a stunning 3" JD and beautiful 2.5" Green Sev this morning... :)

In my experience, redecorating never changed a thing in the cichlid hierarchy. I'm guessing the cichlids used the furniture in the room as reference points as well.

Very interesting theory on the furniture! And wouldn't be at all be surprised if it was right. Never thought of that.

Ha! Never thought about the furniture also...

I'll attempt to get some pics when I get home from work, but this phone takes horrendous pics. The on board camera is complete garbage.

Tried that in the past and it never worked for me. Even removing the aggressor for a few weeks. I find that once of fish claims dominance nothing changed it. Not trying to be a party pooper just my experiences

Then I will add them all together. Going Oscar hunting in the next few days. I figure them growing up together from babies is the best shot I have at this. I am not getting a GT at all though, decided against that. Also torn on a tiger Oscar or albino one.

Ok so I went to the LFS again... Came back with some new friends lol.

So here is my stocking list and what I think I am going to stick with unless someone has any more additions I should go for?

Electric blue Acara
Black convict
Jack Dempsey
Tiger Oscar
Green Severum
6 spotted silver dollars

That is where I am at, everyone seems happy so far. Will get some pics in a few days going to see if I can borrow a friends camera. The reality here is I could be building this 300 sooner than Xmas, it really isn't that expensive. Just going to order little by little for the next few months. Would you guys add any more fish to that list? I'm still unsure on the GT, I still want one but am nervous about it for some reason. No one around here seems to carry Juruparis either...

Well a little update.. Yesterday I got another electric blue acara, as the store only had two and I felt bad buying just one and leaving his buddy behind so now I have them both.

However, the JD has turned into a freaking douche bag, so I am taking him back tomorrow morning. Basically the convict does not seem to care about anyone and goes about his business. The oscar couldn't care less about anything in the tank except for me, totally just infatuated with me being around the tank and wont leave me alone when I am close to it. SD's are just being SD's and bouncing around like nut jobs. Acara's are happy together, and then there is the Sev who is petrified of the JD but will tell the convict to shove it if the con comes close. I am not letting a 4 dollar JD make the rest of my fish all annoyed and stressed out.

I am going to pick up an other O tomorrow, I want an albino to go with my Tiger. I figure with 300 gallons of room, this should not be an issue. Hell, I go on YouTube and see like 90 gallon tanks with 10 huge cichlids in there and they are all doing their thing. I feel bad, but at the same time we are like the 10% who actually care about fish and their proper space and 90% of the population who keep fish have no idea and mistreat them without actually knowing it anyways. So with that in mind I can have that stocking list above just with two acara's and two Oscars and removing the JD and be fairly happy with myself.

The JD is sneaky too, he acts all skittish when I am around or in sight but once I leave he goes nuts and acts like the entire tank belongs to him. He thinks I am not watching. Such a shame too, he has amazing color.

Think you give him (the JD) too much credit. Shame really, my JD is the most docile in the tank. Just goes to show each fish is an individual.

This situation can continue to happen as the other fish grow. Hopefully it wont and these guys last until the other tank is built. Also once those silver dollars settle in i find them to eat like little lawnmowers plus two oscars i think the acaras may have a hard time getting their share

What do you mean give the JD too much credit? Do you mean it may not be his fault?

I know this can happen, I was expecting at least one of them to be a pain lol. But si far everyone else seems really happy with each other minus him. He swims across the tank and it's like a bomb went off and everyone screws.

Instead of getting a second Oscar, would you try a smaller female JD? That was something I was considering. I know JDs can be awesome tank mates for Os so I was considering giving it one more go with another one, definately a female this time.
