might not fit a monster but you can do more with a 40 than alot of people think

like what?

I just took apart my planted tank setup and want something closer to monster size.

How about some rainbow cichlids, Herotilapia multispinosa?

If you've never had Bichir's I would deffinatly reccomend a Sen or possibly 2. depending on the dimensions which either I missed or you didn't post. They have alot of personality and are very interesting to have. If you're looking for teeth/fish eater. a needlenose fish would also be a suggestion. They aren't very interesting unless they are hunting feeders. But they are like a miniature gar and can be housed in a 40B. they need the surface space of a 40B imo minimum. They can be kept with anything to big to eat but an adult about 12" can easily eat fish 3"+

Most "monsters" won't exactly fit a 40 gallon (depending on what you consider monstrous). Peacock eel?

Everyone Stop being pesimists. YES YOU CAN have REAL monsters. you just need to know about them.

peacock eel? yuck. definitely not a monster by pikachu's standards.

I'll give you some REAL monsters your looking for:

Charax Gibbosus (Glass Headstander "mini payara") (Get atleast 6)

Exodon Paradoxus (Bucktooth Tetra) (Atleast 10. more is better)

Jack Dempsey (in a 40 breeder. YES you can) (Single Fish)

Electric Blue Jack Dempsey (Slightly smaller than real JD so YES YOU CAN. Not a monster though it acts completely different and hardly predates on fish)

5 Star General Cichlid (VERY predatory. like mini yellow jag) (Species only)

African Butterfly Fish (Mini Arowana)

Pike Livebearer (Toothy gar-like version of a mosquito fish) (Get a small shoal of atleast 6)

Acestro Isaline ("Freshwater Barracuda") (3 or 1)

Catoprion Mento (Whimple Piranha) (Alteast 5)

Serrasalmus Sanchezi (8" Piranha Single species tank)

Senegal Bichir (In a 40 breeder. YES YOU CAN)

Smaller species wolf. (You just need to research)

Notice i comment on what these fish compensate for? its because they do. both in enjoyment value and in being miniature.

hell... i wanna make a mini tank now.

OH, most of these options i labeled so you know to pick between them but not all or a combination. each is its own option. your tank is small after all. and you want only a focus monster species anyway

Get convicts. And since when can a fully grown jd fit in a 36" tank? A bit crammed ya think?

Heres my opinions.

Not to sure about this, but I didn't think 6 8" fish could fit in a 36" tank.

Catoprion Mento (Whimple Piranha) (Alteast 5)
Again, not sure, but 5 6" mean fish in a 36" tank might be asking for trouble

Serrasalmus Sanchezi (8" Piranha Single species tank)
WONT WORK

banded leporinus, spiny eels, some BGK's for a while until they grow bigger...

Red/rainbow wolf fish

a pikehead and two medium sized nandus species for the bottom.

They both stay relatively small (pikehead 5'' 8'' depending on sp and nandus 3'' - 7''+ sepedig on sp.)

:D
