Stocking suggestions for a 40g? Looking for Monsters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i think a single EBJD would do fine, it would have to be alone though, or only have one or 2 other small tankmates.

Retuks You have never seen a peacock eel on the prowl then.. mine love feeder guppies.. and are rather interesting fish. They may not have teeth like a exo but That can be one nasty fish.

EBJD?.. why people keep reccomending this fish? I've kept many JD's and had many many many in stores I've worked in. Yes it is a pretty blue fish. But if your favorite color is orange then an Oranda is just as Monster as an EBJD... ?...

I think the big question to ask back is what "monster" type are you looking for? many cichlids are aggresive. but a majority of their diet will be pellets. Are you looking for a strictly fish eater? or a tank banger? or Just something thats oddball? what criteria are you looking to fill?

EBJDs, while slow growers, can get pretty large. Almost as big as a regular JD. I've seen them at 12".

Well, I was interested in a fish that would act as a show fish. I wanted a large fish that the tank viewers can instantly see that that is the main fish. And in order to define "monster", which i should have to begin with is a fish that is considerably large or will stand out very brightly in contrast to the rest of the tank. I don't need a fish that eats live fish (actually I'd be much happier without feeders at all, but the occassional ones just to balance out a diet are fine). Drab colors are not what I'm looking for (except for a sen bichir). Retuks, i loved the list you gave me and whoever gave me the link to the minimonsters thread, thankyou. I'll be doing a lot more research, but if anyone has any more suggestions with these guidelines that'd be great. Thanks.

ahh. if they don't nessesarily have to eat fish and look drab with fancy teeth, you shoulda just said you need a cool looking show-stopper kinda fish. theres plenty REALLY nice looking ones that aren't monster at all :naughty:.

Get convicts. And since when can a fully grown jd fit in a 36" tank? A bit crammed ya think?

Heres my opinions.

Convicts are just overgrown mosquito fish born in the wrong family... hardly a monster or a show fish. hell they're more common than goldfish.

how big do you think JDs get? they only grow around 8". yes a 40 breeder is more suited to what were talking about. but many of these fish can still fit in 36"... so they are your opinions after all.. but lets clear some things up for you:

Jack dempseys are natural piscivores. They mainly feed on fish and rotting protein-based particles on the ocean floor. idk where you get the idea to generalize them with all cichlids and even then, assume all cichlids eat/will only eat pellets.

One thing people don't realize is the EBJD may be the same species, but it might as well not be because for some reason it instinctively a piscivore like the jack. its a "cool looking fish" above anything and by no means a monster.

uhhh... Pike livebearers don't grow to 8". they hit maybe 4" or slightly bigger in the aquarium so idk where you saw that.

Wimple piranhas aren't "Mean fish". just oversized blackskirt tetras if you ever saw one. they will love shrimp but won't really devour any feeders if you try to use them. they do fin nip and scale OCCASIONALLY but 5 is the magic number for these fish much like 10 is for exodons. these fish are monsters because they do have impressive teeth but they are solely for looks rather than bite. thank you for stating that you are not sure on these because that is all you needed to say.

A Sancheze can easily fit in a 40 breeder. and it covers all aspecs of what the man is asking for: Nice showy coloring, one species show fish, and by all means a monster. more so than anything else i mentioned here.

ive seen a peacock eel escape from the tank, dry out, shrivel up and try to pretend like it's a piece of chinese candy... nothing cool about that... it didn't even know it wasn't halloween yet.. stupid fish.

they just look so fragile to me. like i could break their little snout off accidentally by making the current too strong.

Don't place electric blues in the same light as regular jack dempseys. Regular jacks are in all essence a predator. every electric blue ive seen or looked after have never eaten a single fish so i consider them two different cichlids all together.

saying cichlids aren't predatory is like saying characins aren't predatory. when you have everything from silver dollars to payara, it doesn't really work out that way.
