Stocking suggestions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I read so much info online that said convict cichlids would be fine in with the blue acara I gave it a go. I had two Honduran red point in with them the breeder said they were 2 females ended up being one male, one female, they beat up the blue acara very badly. I had to take the HRP into my LFS because no amount of changing deco, or adding additional hides stopped the fighting.

I've kept and bred goldfish for 5 years now, this cichlid business is a lot harder and I really appreciate all the suggestions and help.

I will ask around and see if biotodoma cupido are available here, they are beautiful.

I think in the end I'll keep stocking levels low, I love breeding fish and raising fry so my focus is likely to end up more on that. Setting up the brine shrimp hatchery and watching the little fry grow is just the best.

I think for stocking I'll end up with something like this

2 andinoacara pulcer (they might be latifrons I'm not sure)
4-6 biotodoma cupido or Mikrogeophagus altispinosus...is this a suitable number?
10-20 lemon tetras or similar tetra

I adore Geophagus red head tapajos and would happily switch out the cupido or Bolivia rams for these if I could find a breeding pair.

I'm not sure about a clean up crew yet but I think I'll need something to manage the algea on my live plants and driftwood

For the biotodoma cupido or altispinosus, if your considering breeding, I would get at least 8 to ensure a good group of females to males.

I keep rethinking my stocking for this tank. Which of these do you think will make for a more active and engaging display?

Option one
2 blue acara
6 keyhole cichlids
20 emperor tetra
2 peppermint bristlenose plecos

Or

Option 2
2 blue acara
3 spotted hoplo
4 Bolivian rams
10 red eye tetra

Option 3
2 blue acara
8 emerald Cory
8 Bolivian Rams
12 Lemon tetra

I haven't had anything but goldfish and waterhouse snails in so long, making a decision is very hard.

Went hunting for some of the stock I'm interested in today, no luck. I saw one sad female Bolivian Ram that I might have saved if my spare tote wasn't being used to keep filter media cycled for the setup of the 110 this weekend.

Looks like I will have to spread my search out wider.

My stocking may end up being decided by whatever I can get my hands on at this point. :/

We all know how it feels. Its hard to find what you want without having to order online $$$$.
I also like option #1

I was hunting around for Biotodoma cupido and found a post on an Aussie fish forum dated back to 2008 that said someone was selling 4 of them, unsexed he was asking $1800. Aquariums do not stock them. :(
