Um, there is plenty of people that NEED to hunt. I suppose they could be gov slugs....

I find that hard to believe.

Your speaking to someone that when young was in that position. We needed at LEAST two deer a year to feed my parents, brother sister and myself. If we went fishing, we neefed to bring home fish. We had a massive garden every year and god help us if it was a bad year. I suppose we could have been gov slugs but we could survive. But we needed that meat. To say no one needs to hunt anymore is being dense man. Sry. You got to remember there is still people out there who doesnt want the govs help, or cant get it. There is significant amounts of truly poor people, that need/greatly benefit from hunting

Fishing is one sport that is pretty much IDENTICAL to what is happening with these turtles. Think about it. You're baiting a fish, in its wild habitat with a sharp metal hook that pierces its flesh, you stress it out, fight with it, flop it up on the boat, leave out of water gasping for breath for several minutes, then you either toss it back in or in cooler to die slowly until you eat it, or like some guys, just leave it on dry land until it dies. How is that ANY different than what these guys are doing with the turtles?

I disagree. Fishing yourself is often more humane than the way commercial suppliers work. When I fish, the fish is usually just liphooked, brought quickly to the shore, unhooked, released instantly if it's not one I'd be keeping for food, or swiftly killed if I plan on taking it home. Commercially, they're usually hauled up from the sea using nets that can damage the seabed, and a lot of the contents die, food worthy or not. There is no glorifying of the death during fishing, if anything you try to minimise that aspect as much as you can.

These guys have a tub with snappers in it. These snappers could already be stressed or injured from collecting them. They're not swiftly killing them as painlessly as possible. They're putting on a show, with an audience. There is one kid in particular in one of the snapperfest videos who seems to be getting a lot of perverse enjoyment from the death of the turtle. If you're going to relate it to a "sport", relate it to bullfighting, except the bull doesn't have a chance of winning.

There are responsible people out there, but really, what planet are you living on? Are you aware of what really goes on? No glorifying the deaths?

And if you think fighting these guys at the end of a hook is any more humane than turtle wresting, then you need to open up your eyes. Do you think the fish is ok with this, or that he knows what's going on? He goes to eat a meal and next thing he knows he has a hook in his mouth and is being drag through the water. I don't see how this is any better than a turtle having his head yanked out of his shell.

I can appreciate that, and respect that, but at the end of the day, it's still a choice. We eat meat because we want to, not because we need to. And don't get me wrong. I'm not at all a PETA freak. Because like I said, I enjoy hunting, fishing and eating meat. I just don't understand how people here say these guys are scum of the earth, when we are no better than them.

i'm not gonna get into the PETA discussion, but i have to say that i agree with jcardona about the double standard

i don't like this snapperfest thing and wouldn't participate in it myself, but i feel that fishing and other things like the circus and sea world shows are just as cruel

if you're ok with fishing (catch and release), the circus shows and things like that, but bash these "scum" then to me, that is hypocritical.

With ya there. Just saying about hunting

Excellent post, I'll eat some humble pie with this one. I was referring to my own way and experience with fishing, which I'd hope is a responsible one, not such acts as you have put up, and I'm not sure how I overlooked that, but thanks. Being a UK resident familiar with local river and sea fishing, I overlooked the big game side of the sport, my bad.

I fish on a local river and coastline for edible species, under guidance of the environmental agency. Fish have to be a certain size, and adult females are not allowed to be kept at certain times of the year to protect fish stocks. It's not indiscriminate, I use baits which attract the species I want to catch. The death of any fish I decide to keep is not glorified. I kill them as quickly as possible, and it is honestly the least enjoyable part of the sport.

The images you've shown are big game fishing, which is only undertaken by people looking for a trophy photo. I would not say it was the same as what I do, but I understand I am biased.

My issue with the snapperfest situation is that the contestants have already caught the turtles. If they want to eat them, I do not see why they need to have a huge audience watch the kill. Killing something should not be glorious like that, and I think it's just encouraging others to abuse animals. Any of the kids in the audience could find a young snapper in the wild afterwards, and decide to try and kill it to imitate what they saw at snapperfest. That is my problem with the glorifying, because it encourages senseless killing.

Again, I'm sorry for overlooking other sides of fishing, that was short-sightedness on my part.
