Filter socks!
meh...although a sump/filter roller would be cool!

I have to disagree about the filter socks. Sure they do work well but no better then using filter floss. They are absolute pia to deal with. Cleaning them is a nightmare and time consuming. I’m not keeping buckets of bleach hanging around to soak them in waiting to spill in my house. Baffles and filter floss forces the water through them and is absolutely the quickest to change and replace. To each there own. I do believe in keeping the baffles to a minimum.
Filter socks (as said above), or cut squares or rectangles of Porret foam to shape.

I put bio-media in mesh bags, makes it easy to pull the bag and shake it in a container of tank water when detritus gets thick, and it needs cleaning.

I also like large open spaces in sumps, in case I want to experiment with new filtration technology, add another heater, or larger pump, and... I put containers of substrate in those areas for jump starting a cycle in another tank, etc etc

I avoid the pita by just throwing them in the washing machine with my work clothes lol.
how big of a tank do you have? I would do a sump, I’m just so paranoid about bypass.
filter rollers (I’ve also seen them called “sump-rollers”) look cool.
Damnit now I’m back at square one with sump vs canister.
for brackish and salt I’d do a sump no questions asked. But for fresh I’m on the fence
Your A brave man lol. There’s no way my wife would let be get away with that move!
I wouldn’t worry about bypassduanes is correct that baffleless works just as well as baffles biologically speaking. I am run a large bare bottom aquarium an run my bio media heaters and return all in the same compartment that takes up 75% of my sump. The water runs right over the media and returns back to the aquarium.
