IMO it's a little lame to hate on someone's taste in fish. I'm biased cuz I like them all in their own way. I keep rare stuff because I want things I've never kept before, but if you look at most hobbyists (especially aquarium clubs) you will see that dedicated and experienced keepers will give their all to keeping and breeding common things like angels and especially fancy guppies. They don't do it for me, but to each their own.

Also lame to bash a lobbyist for breeding and choosing to name there fish. Whether it's your preference or not hating from a far and now creating a dumb rap makes you rubbish. What is great is we are all entitled to our own opinion

Here,here.

I'm surprised the mods haven't shut this thing down yet. 14 pages of insults. I've seen threads closed for less.

I like wild types period. I'm a slice of nature guy. But I can see both sides. Line breeding and crossing local populations is not my cup of tea. But it is obviously human nature to enjoy it, as we have been doing it since the beginning of time. I think the history of the fighting fish (betta imbellis, splendens, etc) is extremely interesting. If I ever make it to Thailand I am going to bring back a fighter, even though they are far from a natural specimen.

I don't know if the names are a big deal. There is no confusing "vodoo" or "diablo" with a collection point. If they were choosing names like Rio Voodo, I could see the issue. If everyone started doing it, then it could get hectic. But I don't think there are many people with large fish rooms that will start their own selective breeding programs.

IMO, as long as you know what you are crossing, and market it as such, you are doing your part to be responsible. I think the guys that posted fish fit that description.

I'll always enjoy fish with collection data more than looks. But I will be the first to admit that I know I am part of the minority.

I'm not so sure, i think biotope aquariums are becoming more and more popular.
People like myself that like biotopes will always want fish how they are from the wild.
I'm not drawn to strains, I like things natural.
That's why I don't like crossing two species that are the same with different catch locations.
I would rather preserve the fish as they are.
Strains do have there place in the hobby,I know but to sacrifice a scarce natural location fish and change it seems a shame to me.

Idk I'm all over the board on this one. I would personally consider the diablo and the gorillus to be strains. Unless I'm mistaken, these fish have specific, heritable traits that make them unique. I still stand by the fact that it's wrong to simply call gorillus a subspecies - that taxonomic term has specific requirements and must be upheld by the scientific community. Even if you believe it to be a subspecies you can't just call it that.

But when it comes to the "Imperial Festae" I felt differently. These are very nice fish, but do not to seem to have any traits that are unique from the general population. Some fish are just naturally prettier than others, just like people. If they had a blue face or something then I think that would warrant a strain name!

Our current practice of buying 6 siblings and letting them pair off is not sustainable. You are still line breeding, even though not intentionally. If it is ever up to the hobby to be a safe harbor for a species that is extinct in the wild, we would have to make some big changes.

And then you go down the road of what is acceptable . I brought in a group of wild Apistogramma baenschi. One male looks incredibly better than the rest. I chose to keep fry from him...So I am already taking the first step towards "improving" a wild fish.

I'm rambling, but I just want to get across the point that what BastardFish is doing is not totally different from what anybody does when they buy a group and pick the best-looking specimen to breed. We don't even know the majority of the time if collection data is legitimate, my A. baenschi were simply labeled as being from a country. The colorful male could be a different location within that country for all I know.

And second, the current practice in the hobby is unsustainable, so the resource is being wasted the majority of the time anyway.

My .02 lol

I'm not sure.
I keep and breed thorichthys helleri catch location laguna catazaja.
I know the fry will grow up the same as the parents.
If i were to cross them with thorichthys helleri from Lake miramar I would be altering the species.
1 species from 1 location can have an entirely different appearance than the same species from another.
What you are talking about is using the nicest fish you have from 1 location. There is a difference.
