Strains?

For the haters like Stan z and others , I don't get your huffing and puffing like ,you kids got your Legos stolen.
Two respected sources in the hobby Dan cichlids of america and Jeff Rapps both have specific trade names, strain names whatever you want to call it.
But the hypocritical minds don't say anything about that. Look on there stock lists...If you don't like the fish don't buy them. Continue with your so called purist thinking. My bet is your fish are probably crossed location , hybrid , or inbred. Bottom line is you keep talking so we seem to be in your minds.

Why do the discus people seem to get a pass on this issue?

The difference, to my mind, is there are still plenty of wild caught discus available. They're from South America where governments are open to permitting hobbyist collecting. So wild caught discus, and Pleco's are widely available.

But, Central American countries are not so open to collecting wild fish, so you don't see "plenty" of wild caught Argentea, Zonatus, Trimac's, etc. The stock of those fish in the hobby is, not entirely, but mostly, captive bred specimens from stock collected years ago.

Also, there are only 2 reputable places I know of where I can get buy CA Vieja and Amph's and be reasonably certain that they are the species I ordered -- Jeff Rapps and Dan Sharifi.

So these fish are not widely available--Discus are.

How many of you have dogs? Are they grey wolves? Do you ridicule your neighbors' Pomeranians? Then you have designer dogs... Why is the purity of a fish so sacred? It's a rhetorical question, but a valid comparison.

My fish are F1, and I like to know the collection location. I get it. To me the difference is doing what you want and liking what you want vs imposing your values on others.

That seller is defining "strain" as catch location. Which seems perfectly valid and consistent with "Stan's" point. At this point you have to acknowledge that you are just being a jerk.

and should shut our mouths because someone has alot of experience. I feel I have quite a bit of experience myself, in fact I have enough life experience and maturity to not get my panties in a bunch when someone disagrees with me or feel that their opinion shouldn't matter because I've been around longer. I guess I just don't get it. Lately more and more I see this strain and that strain. Silly names given by people that have spawned a few fish in their tank. A few are going as far as having papers made up. Are you kidding me its a fish. Looks like people that don't have the space/time for dogs. Are focusing their breeding efforts on fish do everyone a favor and just quit it. The only labels that mean anything to me are WC, f1, f2 etc. If you want to breed pitbulls do it don't bring this nonsense to fishkeeping. Nothing against pitbulls I happen to own one great dogs best bud for life.

The same species from a different catch location can be very different in appearance to each other.

First off none of use posted a single hybrid for discussions they were pure so yapping about hybrids is off your own topic. Second don't make assumptions or makes things up my Diablo strain is far more established than two breedings lol... Next what's the point of a serious hobbyists gentleman?? What is it? It's to keep what you live, keep them well, breed if that's your thing and better what you keep period that's everyone's goal end of story and you all know it. Strains are named by many and it will continue and grow nothing any of you crying can do about it. It is marketing of course when you have something stand or set apart you market it now don't you. You want it identified as different or special if it is. What we do is better pure blood lines threw breeding programs with standards and it shows and they hobby knows lol sorry to bust your bubble boys be MFK is far from the only platform for fish anymore and even the hating people still know this they wouldn't hate... I've been keeping fish for 29 years seen and heard it all
I've always been a pure blood cichlids keeper but I am also very well know I. The hybrid world and have many accolades with them. One thing I don't or ever do is mix crap and lie lol
If you see hybrid I have told you and I will probably charge you more for one lol
If it's pure your told I don't believe in market deception in fact I myself frown on it
By the way none of you can at any point at will obtain any collection point of any one cichlids ever it's always changing in the trade for several reasons and many you don't see often
So to say taking two pure location and crossing leaving you a better or stronger still pure blood polutes things is again super ignorant and shows your lack of knowledge
If it's something Kiel that again people will market and want credit for their works so we identify with a strain name
No one sends them back to thei county of origins for repopulations and you still have plenty selling you fish from whatever locations are available at any one time now don't you. Your never going to see its crosses or mixed like you assume just not the way it works
If your a pot farmer you make a strain your not going to be allowing it to be sold as someone's else's Strain are you no.. Same thing and one of you made a good point this is done all the time with discus and Africans yet we see no young there now do we. Open your horizons gents you will become a better partitioner and have a better time in the hobby
And again you all are welcome to step up and better our stains if you think you can should you have something negative to say on them we have yet to see anyone rise to the occasion
