Strange injury to goonch catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks mate it’s definitely a tough one to swallow I’ll definitely try again in future as I was planning to turn that tank into a mainly goonch tank so I could observe their natural behaviours I’ll probably give it a while though that’s left a bad taste in my mouth for the time being. I may go down the natural subtropical route for them as well as I’ve seen quite a few people on here have some luck with that
Hardest part now is knowing what they are and they keep switching the names 😑… ive been looking for true B. lica from borneo as they look the best to me. Lots are sold as that now and B. Yarelli when there actually the ones from indochina. Ie. Thailand, vietnam… I kept true highland giants from india 15yrs ago. Atleast then u knew they needed colder high 02 water and zero stress from any parameter fluctuations.

That’s exactly the problem it’s crazy that there’s so little reliable information on such a popular species and a lot of the information we do have completely contradicts itself. I bought mine as a dwarf goonch “bagarius bagarius” but some people say the bagarius bagarius is one of the giant goonch species. I’d say from my experience with him that I doubt he’d have exceeded 1/2ft. And he was sold to me as a warm water tropical goonch but I definitely noticed improvements in his behaviour lowering the temp down to 23/24c from the 27/28 I had him at originally to match what the shop kept them at

I think going forward I want to try and keep a large group of the subtropical goonch to mimic their natural environment but sourcing them seems like it’ll be mainly trial and error as you say it’s just a shame as they’re beautiful fish and I don’t love the idea of experimenting with such delicate species
