for $200-300 you would get a banjar or 1.5 grade 2 red which are crap and just look no better than a green and to tell the truth a green would look better with more shine

the most you can expect from a banjar grade 2 red is a red tail even that will probably be orange not red

no bargins are to be had with asian aros you get what you pay for and they are cheap for a reason

the best value for money is a red tail gold but again if you buy a cheap one dont expect to get a high shine and half the body will be a green/brown colour

Personally i like greens. Not everyone shares your elitist point of view

if its a green you want then why not just buy a jar they have more colour than a green so it shouldnt bother you if you can get a asian aro or not

its the colours that make asian aros better than other aros dont say you like the shape as they are not much different to a jar

plus a green is very aggressive compaired to other asian aros much like a jar

T1, come on now, jardini's resemble asian greens, but still not the same. shape, poster, scales, just to name a few differences...

greens are cheap so why dont you see loads of green asian aro comms as you could set one up for less than a high grade red or gold the reason is greens are far more aggressive than other asian aros

if you want a asian aro soooooo much then at least get one with some colour or whats the point

a adult jar looks much better to me than a crap banjar or green

why waste money on a green then a banjar then a rtg then finally get a super red or xback why not save your money and get the fish you want at the start

dont think you can buy a small rtg then grow it and sell it to make money to buy a higher grade as it doesnt work like that

a 6inch rtg will cost £300-350 in the UK a 20inch rtg will cost you £200-300 depending on how it turns out the main reason for this is you can see how the rtg has turned out at this size most people buy small rtg hoping they will turn out great when most just turn out average

i have been down the upgrade road started with a banjar with nice red tail once it got to 20inch it was rubbish so got a rtg the shine level was very low so sold that then got a 24k which had great shine levels which droped fast as it had been white tank treated
then went flat out and got 7 blue base xbacks and 2 chilli reds grew them for 2 years then just kept the one red that didnt attack my tigers

you can spend years looking for the perfect aro as you need to give each aro a chance to mature

most of the aros or big tigers you see for sale are for sale for a reason they fight
imagine if you have a nice ST and you spend $2k on a aro and they fight what do you do as you will need to sell one as a large tiger can do real damage to a expencive aro

my chilli red is not the best by a long shot but its well matched with my ST some weeks the ST is boss then a few weeks later the aro is boss

keeping one fish per tank is boring but it takes guts to mix a £2k aro with other fish that could kill it

people think comm tanks are easy with different fish but it takes time to get the mix right

also if i had a power cut its not just the pain of losing the fish its like $15k im losing so you need to have a big UPS power back up just in case or a generator no point in saying after all your fish die that you will get one

lots of things need to be taken into account once you start spending high end money on fish its not just all about good water and food as you wont find many insurance companys who will insure fish

most people crap there pants if a $20 tiger wont eat pellets after 1 week what would they do if there $2k aro stops feeding which they do do my aro stopped feeding for a month but hey what can you do EAT OR DIE thats the rules no matter how much a fish cost and asian aros do go of food every now and then

For example look at prices 10 yrs ago where asian aros are legal to import, RTG's were 1000-1100, xbacks and reds were 4000-5000+.
You need to do research, instead of pulling number out of thin air... :screwy:

What the he** is all this mumbo jumbo for? :) i read only a few words out of each paragraph...

I don't even know what the discussion about greens not being common due to their aggression, your guts at attempting compatibility with so many expensive fish, or the possibility of raising an arowana with the hopes of selling it for a profit when it is larger has to do with the initial post and subsequent conversation regarding pricing for asian arowana's ?

I got, or ordered rather, a green aro as I liked the look of the asian aro and thought it would be good to try out one of the cheaper ones rather than buying 18000 bbxb's at once. Kinda like that saying, you should learn to crawl before you walk. I would prefer to learn lessons on a cheaper arowana so that when, or if, the time comes, and I get an expensive asian aro I have got the learning out of the way.

Pulling #'s out of thin air??? These prices were based off of what LFS's in "Canada" were selling for back in 2001-2003. I think u need to do your research on what retail prices were going for at LFS's in "Canada" before u post...

As I recall my buddy picked up his first RTG in the year 2001 from a LFS in Canada for around $1200 CAD.

What it means is no one ever finds the perfect aro and you can spend a lot of time and money looking for

With a silver black or jar that's all it is and people are normally happy with the aro they get
With Asian aros there is always a bit of dissapontment after spending such a large amout of money on a fish that may not turn out perfect

As for protecting a investment anyone with $2k + worth of fish in there tank without some kind of power backup in place is a fool
I have a UPS power back up and SMS alerts if things go wrong I need to know fast if things are going wrong

My whole point is with such a large amount invested in the fish you would be crazy not to protect it or would you not have a alarm on your car

You won't be getting Asian aros any time soon in the US so I always find this kind of thread a waste of time

Look at the poll on how many people say they would by one I would like to see the names of the people who said they would buy one to see if any off them are people who tell others they paid 175 for a black aro that was to expencive and they got robbed

I get what t1 says. Like anything in life you will always want somethingbetter. Always upgrading. Unlike t1 i like greens i think they are cool. I can get whatever aro i choose in canada (to some extent) silver, black, jar, any color asian. I personally am getting some yellowtails next month. They are not expensive but again i like them and think they are cool. Personally i prefer asian aros. their shape their personality the whole package. But i m also thinking of getting just a goldxb instead of a attempted aro community. Ive always wanted a comm but the reality of it is scary. Buying 5 small asians and hoping i can find the right combo in there somewhere. I also feel like the prices are dropping in canada for asian aros (not the super high quality ones), and buying them off lfs is akin to throwing away hundreds of dollars. Bottom line is that the americans arent getting asian aros legally anytime soon. They should but they wont. if they were gonna it would of already happened. sucks for them imo
