According to the OP he works for US Fish & Wildlife.... hence the finely crafted poll for the purpose of a "Study". Give me a break.

MerLion Emerald Red Tail: $ 200.00 ~ $ 300.00 , assuming this is an RTG, the cost for this fish in the us is > 1000 usd

Merlion red tail is Banjar red. Merlion gold is RTG and Merlion gold HB is HBRTG. U guys pay for a RTG 1000 usd black market price. In Canada we pay avg of 600-800 retail for a regular RTG legal price. It's merely the same prices in Canada compared to getting it directly from the farm itself. Like I said before we pay a tad more due to importing and shipping fees. If anyone is confused on the cheaper priced aro colors on that Merlion farm list the:

Merlion gold HB = HBRTG
Merlion gold = RTG
Merlion red tail = Banjar red
Merlion gold tail = yellow tail
Merlion green tail = green

Is there enough market for me to bring in a few via Montreal and start breeding- ostensibly for the CDN & UK markets?

Yes there is, you should bring some in and then flood the market. Even selling them at $100 should make you a tidy profit. But if it is illegal where you are then it might not be worth it.

Montreal? Good luck trying to breed them as the climate there is way too cold unless u have a 10000+ gallon indoor pond. If we could breed Aros in Canada's climate it would of happened long time ago. I know a koi farm (West coast koi) breeder locally here in Victoria, BC who tried to breed Asian Aros and failed miserably and he had well over the space to breed them. Easier said then done.

Partly yes. West coast koi is on a few acres and his inside breeding ponds are at least 30' x 30' and he has multiple ponds at least 20+. They are all in garage type sheds like a warehouse. Even if the ponds were well heated our climates here just isn't warm enough. Our winters still get down to 0 degrees calcius which don't even come close to south east Asia's climates. South east asia climates stay at 30+ Calcius all year around. I still don't think a 10000 gallon pond is enuf size for breeding arowanas successfully, them Asian farms ponds are outdoor and they're huge. I would also assume his attempt failed due to our water conditions being different. The sad thing is he imported 10+ adult size Asian Arowanas males and females. Today they are all dead. His attempt was over 10 years ago and back then Asian Aros weren't cheap. He pretty much lost 40-50k from trying. Also think how much heating would cost to heat those ponds. I would assume he lost way more then 50k in trying. No matter what in general it's not easy to breed arowanas where we are at or they would've been breeding farms here already. Arowanas been around in this hobby for a very long time.

thanks for the info. wow.. if they were all dead. i think the problem probably ran deeper than just not being able to get them to breed. here in the us, the only place that may have a chance establishing a breeding farm is probably florida and hawaii. and even then i think you need a mud pond to get the best result.
