Stupid petsmart :p

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ShadowBass, you are probably right most people don't care, but some people do care. To me if the opportunity arises to right a wrong, it don't take that much effort to take 30 seconds of you life and potentially be helpful:)

I generally enjoy the interaction of fellow hobbiests on MFK and other boards. Differing opinions and ideas are part of what make it a great expierance. It's plain to see that others don't share this attitude. In this one thread alone I've yet to see a single constructive or I might add polite post by the self appointed god of the thread... bderick67.

Still wondering how it is that I'm asked for information to back up my possition when you don't feel obligated to recripocate nor do I see in any of my posts anything approching the sort of impolite name calling responces that seem to make you feel a lot better about who and what you are.

If you like pulling strings to watch people jump then find yourself a chat room. That sort of behavure has no place here nor I'm told will it be tolerated by the moderators.

Agreed, I have worked with too many of those myself. Just a little touchy on the whole every Petsmart employee is a moron thing.

yea I didnt mean they were morons I meant these girls that came in that day sorry

I do agree with its not all the employee but honnestly is it that hard to ask how big is your tank about how often do you do wc's? you know basics. thats all I did when I worked at petco.. Then again, unless you ask a question the common "I want that one its pretty" person wouldnt know. ehh its a hit and miss thing with those. I know I knew where we would get our fish so I never bought from there.but still poor things :(

personally I hate getting questioned it is annoying lol.... I JUST WANT THE FISH!!! :D

I'm not sure what you want me to back up, nowhere have I posted any stated fact that would need verification.

If you feel this is what is going on, then you are more then welcome to report this post.

You sir are the one that made the statement regarding the tags that are "not that far off" at petsmart. I disagree with that. Nothing that you have posted from that point does anything to strengthen that point. The bottom line is petsmart is providing incorrect information, are you dending that?

Although I will stay active in this thread, I will no longer reply to this on this matter. I am sorry if you have been offended by anything I might have said.

Oh i just hate to fuel the fire...but yeah WOLF3101 couldn't be anymore correct. I don't have any evidence, facts, or figures to back it up (nor do I care enough to research it), but personally I severly doubt that more than mabye 1-2% of fish sold in the US survive to thier adult size. Being in the industry, I can't even imagine how many hundreds of thousands of oscars, pacus, pangasius catfish, etc. etc. are sold on a daily basis at pet stores. How many of these people are even slightly equipped to take care of these fish? How many of them have even a 55?

Prime Example: Columbian Cat Sharks, Silver Tip Sharks, whatever you want to call them... how many thousands of these are sold...how many end up in 300 gal plus, brackish or salt water aqariums? any of them?

As I said, I do still try to educate and help people whether or not I think the person will end up taking my advice.

Some people that come into our LFS actually think we work there because we're always in there getting fish out of the tanks for ourselves and giving people advice lol.

It is still kind of disappointing the amount of people that just don't care whether they kill fish or can't comprehend that their fish might outgrow the tank or be unhealthy if they don't set up their tanks properly.

I completely agree. And as far as the brackish fish it's not souly the pet stores and buyers. The people that pet stores are ordering from usually ship these fish in fresh water and list them as fresh water, so most people unless told otherwise don't think to look it up.

It goes the other way too. My LFS ordered some Leopard Ctenopoma and the dealer sent them in freshwater, listed them as brackishwater, and just as one of the employees was about the drop them in the brackishwater tank we saw what they were and stopped him.

As far as the customers, I see over and over again people buying golfish, irridescent sharks, pacu, all kinds of larger fish for tanks as small as 5 gallons, almost always not cycled, and I can't imagine many of the fish live very long.
I'm always happy to find a fish store that doesn't even keep pacu and such in their tanks.

I wish all fishkeepers were MFK's. Then the fish would be as happy as we are.

But on a more serious note, I was at my LFS yesterday, and saw one of those mother/child combos near the fish section. You know, the ones buying the tank, filter, food, lights, and fish all at once cause the kid wanted a fish on the spot. The mother had a shopping cart with a 10g, accessories, and was in the process of asking the lady to bag her 5 RED BELLIED PACUS!!! She liked them cause they looked like piranhas. After the store lady told her a 10g would be fine, I respectfully intervened. In all politeness, I told her that a pacu, much less five, would grow way too large for anything less than a 300 (even that is pushing it). At that point, the store lady confronted me, and asked me to leave the store, since I was harrassing the other customers. I implored once again for her not to take the fish, but was then escorted by the manager outside. As I was in my car ready to leave, I see the lady and child walking out, the child jumping up and down in excitement, holding TWO BAGS with 4 or 5 pacu in each. May God have mercy on their souls.
