Here I'll throw another one out that bothered me the other day.

I was in line at Petsmart behind this guy with a basket full of bags of fish.
Here's what was in the bags:

10 goldfish
2 Jack Dempseys
2 Oscars
1 Dragon Goby
4 Bala Sharks
and something else I can't remember

All of this was going in his 55gal that he set-up the day before. So I tried to explain to him about cycling, fish compatability, fish size, etc.....

All I got from him was a dumb look:eek: and that's pretty much what I get every time I intervene and try to assist other people. I'm to the point now when I go in these stores I get what I need and get out. Cause I know the "real" LFS are doing the right thing and not just trying to make a buck.

Why should he worry the fish have a warranty, when one dies he get's a new fish. He'll continue that pattern until he gets fed up and posts his tank on Craigslist.

It's not right but it will never change...it's been going on since you could win goldfish in a bowl at the carnival...It's human nature traits like "arrogance", "selfishness", and stupidity.....

my husband and i were in petsmart last nite (its the only fishstore in my town) and the kid working in the fish dept was showing a family around the department talking about the different types of fish. He told the family "Hey watch this!" and pulled a goldfish feeder out of the tank barehanded and threw it in the malawi african tank and they all laughed as it was torn apart... For the encore, he showed the discus which were just across from the africans, and told the family "These guys are just like oscars!" and that the only thing they feed ALL of their fish were bloodworms. The family asked why the lights were off on the large discus tank display, and he stated they were sick. A few days earlier, i was in there and saw that they were all covered with black peppered like dots.. a sign of poor water condition or poor feeding.

I was so :irked:'d off i wanted to tear that kids head off after throwing goldfish in the malawi display.

I am so sick of this argument..

Unintelligent people are found in every place at any given time. Includes employees.

You know where this comes from? Ignorance.

People are just stupid, and don't care to learn.. If your taking the time to read MFK, this isn't you.

The other day some old man came in, I greeted him and asked him if he wanted help.. He declined and gave me the cold shoulder, and acted a bit arrogant. He browsed the fish for a while then decided he was ready.

He wanted a single tiger barb, to go with his other tiger barb.. Of course, at this point I am not going to quiz him on his tank size or tank mates because he was an ass to me, and obviously knows his stuff.. Like 2 tiger barbs are a school.

Then he goes over to the african cichlids and picks out a jewel cichlid.. I simply say "You know these are aggressive right?", and he gives me a smug reply about how he has 3 fish tanks, including a huge 29g..

I bagged both the fish in the same bag and said 'have a great day! Good luck!"

Now should I be categorized as a college kid, who knows nothing about fish, and blindly sells fish irresponsibly?

No.

The guy was a complete ass, was super ignorant, and his fish will die and I don't care. I hope they die. That's what he deserves for being such an ******* to me. I could of helped him, the knowledge was there, he just wasn't willing. I could of refused the sale of the cichlid, and had an angry customer.. Which would of been fine with me really.. but I wasn't feeling sassy or felt like arguing with old balls. But I try to avoid conflict when I anticipate it.. the guy was an old and stubborn and I would rather have him kill his fish and think "fish just die" than go around and rip on me, my store, and the knowledge and livestock I had available..

I am not going to bend over backwards to try to 'save the fishkeeping world of ignorance', when 99% of the dumbasses I deal with daily don't care.

If people come ask me for help, they are often surprised at the knowledge they recieve.. but half the time, it's too much and they don't care.. They want magic water drops that keep fish alive and they don't want to do maintenance.. It's just human greed and stupidity.

but hey if someone was eavesdropping I would get a post about me on a message board.. :D

Mine was a joke. I worked in a fish store in the past, and I feel your pain, Miles. Those who want to learn will ask. Those who don't want to learn will walk in, point at what they want, pay and leave (usually to return the next day or two with a bag of dead fish and NO seperate water sample). Pick your battles.

Had a guy come in the other day to me and lie about his tank size, told me he had 2, 80g tanks, and bought 4 cichlids.. (2 oscars for one, a trimac and dempsey for the other)..

He went to the other store on the other side of town and purchased 4 more cichlids, the same day..

Brought them all in 2 days later in bags, with receipts from both stores and wanted like $70 in returned fish.. He told me his tank leaked. HAHA.

I asked him if both leaked at the same time, and how come if it was leaking and you were there you couldn't save the fish? Did you just let the water leak down to nothing and the fish suffocate and dry out?

I told him straight to his face he was a liar, didn't have two tanks, added to many fish at once and he knows it. I told him if he didn't lie to my face, I would of gave him store credit and helped him. I said I know for a fact you added to many fish all on one day, and you only have one tank (I sold them a 55g starter kit last Christmas).. I asked him to never come back.

He didn't have much to say after I reamed him.

Ignorant jackass trying to take advantage of 'stupid petsmart'.. Hm.

You sir, are my hero. So many times have I wanted to do this to arrogant customers, but feared I may lose my job over it.
