Sturgeon 411.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
compare to other big fish like catfish, arapaima, gator gar, ..., the White sturgeon (or most of the sturgeon species) grow quite slow, a white sturgeon about 6 feet long is usually more than 20 years old while they can grow up to 20 feet!

there are a few different types.. siberian is the most common.. which is what I had.

dam that water is cold lol... i have a pair and i looked up
sturgeon on google... dont know which type it is but its
exactly the same as the google picture...lol i have them in
a grow out right now with a small 3" fei feng {flagtail} and
theyre really active and eat like pigs! my temp is 76-79 and i
got real good aeration and good current on the upper level
of my tank. im hoping to grow em out to put into my pond
when i move in a few months. hopefully theyre grow to be
nice and big & healthy! :)

I've kept mine at higher temps as well, and they also died at those temps too. :(

thats a nice lookin white sturgeon.

I would eat the sturgeon when it is too big.........j/k...............If it take s20 years o grow to 6 feet long, then go ahead try one in large tank, then in a pond...............Remember that higher temperatures lead to faSTER GROWTH...........

I previously had a white and had a similar experience to mshill. I had him from about 3 to about 7" (a few months) and then he just died out of nowhere. I fed him and he acted completely normal. About 30 minutes later, he was dead.

I'm finally trying them again. Things I'm doing differently: for one, this time I got a pair of sterlet which are supposed to be much more warm water tolerant. They are also being kept in the basement where their tank stays cooler. So far, so good.

I used to work at a hatchery that has 10 white that they have raised from babies. They are 20 years old and 3-5' long. They keep them in systems with constant well water flow through at about 52 F with heavy aeration. They also somewhat recently got 9 lake sturgeon from the state of Ohio that they are keeping in the same setup.

Sounds good keep us updated on how it works out for you. Hopefully I won't have any random deaths either...
Sturgeons are really cool fish.:)
