Sturgeon 411.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I previously had a white and had a similar experience to mshill. I had him from about 3 to about 7" (a few months) and then he just died out of nowhere. I fed him and he acted completely normal. About 30 minutes later, he was dead.

I'm finally trying them again. Things I'm doing differently: for one, this time I got a pair of sterlet which are supposed to be much more warm water tolerant. They are also being kept in the basement where their tank stays cooler. So far, so good.

I used to work at a hatchery that has 10 white that they have raised from babies. They are 20 years old and 3-5' long. They keep them in systems with constant well water flow through at about 52 F with heavy aeration. They also somewhat recently got 9 lake sturgeon from the state of Ohio that they are keeping in the same setup.

ive been reading around and heard some sturgeon are born in fw but as they get older move to brackish water or something maybe this is the reason of the random cause of deaths? not sure just a thought

they don't go out to the sea until they near mature, which can take up to 10 years for big sturgeon like white sturgeon!

oh. hmm... i have no clue then lol

I have 3 sterlets that I bought at about 2 to 3 inches and I have them in a 55 gallon tank with two aerators on it and no heater so the water is just at room temperature which is around 70 degrees and they've done great (knock on wood) they're about 7 to 8 inches now. I've found that they love live black worms and frozen blood worms the best but I try to stay away from frozen food with them. Good luck if you decide to get into them they're a fun and interesting species to watch mine never stop swimming day or night.

I have a sterlet and mine loves the bloodworms . I also go to walmart and buy the 2lb pack of mussels they sell in the sea food section. I just cut them up and rinse them. The sturgeon and catfish love them

ive never tried the mussels. I've tried cut up pieces of shrimp and they didn't want anything to do with it. Thanks for the info i'll have to try it out and see if they like the mussles.

I'd agree with you guys except for they take years and years to grow to monster fish and I may never see them grow to huge lengths in my life time. They've only grown a couple of inches in the 2 to 3 years i've had them. Same as my nile perch i've had him for a year and he eats like crazy and hasn't grown and inch in the time i've had him
