Oh I defiantly agree about captive bred specimens.
Sturgeon are having a hard enough time with their long life spans and slow reproduction. And our interference.
For them the world looked a bit different a generation ago.
And they are not the only ones. Think of how many viable young of all species are lost in capture, shipping, pet store housing, no sale no life. And after all that most die in the hands of ignorant owners.
What a waste.
But the truth is there is nothing warm and fuzzy about this hobby. As interesting it may be.
We are keeping pretty little things in a pretty little box so we have something to look at during commercials.
I don't feel the need to pretend I am doing anything beneficial.
I find it hypocritical when we talk so easily of culling the unwanted, the ugly. (not that you did) Then act as if we actually care.
Too many babies? Kill a few hundred.
Killed one big fish? Shame!
As if a small life has less value.
As if we are somehow better people for building more comfortable prisons.
Does a Sturgeon belong in his living room? No!
Neither does a Guppy.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Excellent point! Sometimes we MFK'rs are so pretentious. We need to just:chillpill:...

Here are the maximum lengths of the most common North American sturgeon;
Lake Sturgeon - 8 feet
White Sturgeon - 12 feet 6 inches
Atlantic Sturgeon - 14 feet
Shovelnose Sturgeon - 3'

get a shovelnose if you want a sturgeon, get a shovelnose. Pallid sturgeon are around the same size too. Shovels like large river channels with a moderate current and a firm sand or gravel bottom.

I had what I believe was a diamond back sturgeon when I was in England. He was at least 4 feet long and I ony paid £60. Also it was in my outside pond.

Well, rereading it I guess I sounded a little snotty.
I tend to do that, even when I don't mean it to come out that way.
It's part of my special charm.
It's good advise to choose a smaller fish.
But I come from a farming background. Animals are pretty cute when they are young. You help them be birthed, feed them by hand, sit up all night by their side and nurse them through illness. Raise them up. Teach them, train them, laugh at their goofy individual personalities...then hang them on a hook, bleed'em dry, peel off their skin and chop'em up.
Cows are not as stupid as people think.
And a retarded pig is smarter than a genius dog. Intelligence studies rate them higher than human toddlers.
They know what's going on.
So yeah, I do think people in general are a little delusional.
It's hypocritical to to think we are anything close to nice, while we are feeding our extra special home brewed beef heart recipe to our beloved fish. Which is not much more than an insect with gills.
But still, I guess he should get a smaller sturgeon.
If that will help him sleep better.

Insect with gills is kinda harsh dude, do you feel like all animals are like that? I grew up on a farm as well, we grew all our own food and much of it was ducks, chickens, pigs, cows, and fish. My Grandfather would have kicked my butt if I had the atttude that animals shouldn't given a minimum of respect, they feed us cloth us, provide us with companionship, and beautify our lives, and in some cases take care of us, they deserve more respect than "insects with gills" even insects deserve a small amount of respect. All animals should be treated with respect, wild animals, food animals, pet animals, all of them should be treated as well as possible without undo pain or suffering at the very least. Fish are not insects with gills, I've had many fish that were more like dogs or cats than a lot of dogs and cats seem to be. I have no qualms about killing a fish or any other animals when i't nesesarry but to say fish are just insects with gills show a contempt I don't think is quite right for someone who is keeping them as pets. Tell me you didn't mean it that way dude.

That's how I see things. I look forward to the praying mantises hatching every summer and watching them grow. Right now they're about an inch long and only about 2 weeks old.:D They're very personable little guys too. People often underestimate how intelligent fish and insects are. Every animal has more pontential than most people are willing to accept.

everything evolved to the point it is for a reason regardless of the intellgence of it.

But still, survival of the fittest and the way i see it, if we were smaller than the bugs and fish, theyd kill us and eat us.

Oh, I have respect for all God's critters. Just not for humans.
Does that sound snotty? I don't mean it to be snotty.
But hey, pretty much anything that comes out of me is covered in mucous.
No matter how hard I wipe, it just keeps coming and coming. Pardon me.

I work in a beef packing plant, shipping department. I could make more money on the kill floor, but I can't handle it.
And I only lasted 3 days in the rendering plant. What a mountain of rotting death.
But shipping...it's all in boxes, I can almost ignore it.

Yes, some can argue that all creatures were created for us. By God or evolution.
If by evolution, then we are top dog and can kill and abuse indiscriminately, and shame on us.
If by God, then He said to husband. Animal husbandry. To use, yes. But also to love and respect. This we do not do, and shame on us.
Yes, keeping an animal in best conditions of captivity is better than in worst conditions of captivity.
But lets not pretend we are saints and angels. Lets not pretend we are doing anything out of love and respect for the creatures we keep for our entertainment.
That is what riles me. The hypocrisy of man.
Take a good hard look at the things we do, just because we can. Do not pretend you nor I am wholesome. Or loving, or respectful, or respectable.
To husband these wild things is to leave them wild. And to leave their wilderness wild.
To cadge them at all, no matter the velvety cadge, is itself an act of violence and disrespect.
And we deserve far more for that than plain words of truth.
It is one thing to use for food or other necessity, when we respectfully acknowledge what life they give to us.
It is another to cadge for callus entertainment.
That is not animal husbandry.
That is the hypocrisy of man.

The very least we should offer them, is honesty.
