Calling them primitive is just as inaccurate as calling them ancient or prehistoric...we should just keep "ancient". It matters not the denotation of the word but the connotation.

True that! A rare appearance by Fry rings true!

If you're exchanging ideas on that sub forum title, what about correcting 'polypterus' to 'Polypterids' ?

Though, I supposed sub forum titles aren't about accuracy as much as 'getting the point across'.

True, but they are also here now during recorder history. Calling them prehistoric is as inaccurate as calling them ancient. You can not classify them with a single time period if they were present in both.

These primitive fish have prehistoric ansestors, they themselves are not prehistoric. Maybe a reading of a few definitions would make this clear.

I do not think this forum is referring only to Polys that are alive at the moment, but the species of fish as a whole.

When they decided the set up this forum they wanted to group up fish that have been around for a very long time. They came up with ancient. If they want to stay with a forum section about fish that have been around for a long peroid of time. Prehistoric WOULD WORK.

I am not saying there aren't other options, im not even saying there aren't better options. I'm simply saying "prehistoric" is an option.

The term ''pimitive'' is descriptive and not based on a timeline, using time as a line for prehistoric (before written history)any species older than roughly 3200 bce would need to be included. And thats a whole heap o fish species)
Technically primitive fish include in no order
Polpyterids
gars
lungfish
bowfins
Heterotis niloticus (african arrowana)
Arapaima gigas (Pirarucu)
Now remember most of these species are roughly 100 million years old they have survived continental breakups, ice ages and collisions from space to think something is amiss with them is completely wrong-Anne

However i think this is a great lil discussion please don't stop

I disagree. This site is about keeping fish, and you can't keep what's already extinct.

BTW, it's 'genus of fish as a whole' not species.

"prehistoric" implies that their existence ended before our history began

People find prehistoric artifacts all the time. They still exist when they find them, don't they?
