Sucess! Fahaka and fire eel!

I remember you saying your gt had its lower jaw removed by your puffer.
I don't think it's good to advise people to try things that frequently have dire consequences.

yeah that's kind of a big disclaimer you forgot to mention in that point you were arguing ;) if you want to feel balanced in your advice it's reasonable to FYI that little nugget at the end of your success story
sorry about your GT that sucks

Dude it's all in the thread that I created on what I have learned from my fahaka comm tank... I have nothing to hide and I am not tying to prove anything to anyone. It just what I have discovered so others are aware.

-sorry about the double post I have no idea how or why it does that sometimes
-if you want to mention your thread in other threads don't cherry pick the best parts, leave out the rest and call it balanced and reasonable. When you leave out info like that it's misleading.
Post some pics of that puffer!

You can cross a busy road blindfolded and not get hit by a car. That does not mean you should advise others to try it.
Law of averages tell us,fahaka and tank mates very rarely, if ever works.
I don't class your situation as a successful community as a fish has already lost its lower jaw.
Cichlids are territorial and pick fights.
Salvini can be very feisty.
Your advise is try it if you want.Mine is don't bother. No argument required.

Friedflowwrhornfillet...ehh yeah I see your point i guess as it was so long ago that and that it was the GT that attacked the fahaka (she had a red nose for a week!) that I forget it and anyone who is interested I direct to my thread... as I haven't the time to re-post everything. I have a load pictures on my thread from yesterday as I don't want to photo bomb this poor guys thread... I feel bad we have derailed it horrifically already.

Stanzzz7 I know is said I didn't want to discuss this as we have debated this out on other threads... but I will mention one point. The fish that killed and terrorised more fish than anything I have ever owned was a 11 inch atabapo red pile cichlid, also known to be aggressive but kept in cichlid comm tanks the world over, so should this fish NEVER be comm'ed because I can be a killer? I raise it as isn't most large fish community aquariums 'walking across a road blindfolded' until something happens? This forum is resplendent with people who have killer cichlids in comm tanks etc....

You make a valid point.
Some cichlid community tanks are just as much of a gamble as what you are trying with the fahaka, can't disagree there.
Personally I have never been a fan of mixed aggressive tanks, they are rarely ever successful long term.
Most people that have had "success" don't normally mention the poor underdog cichlids that got batterd and left clinging onto life in the top corner of the tank.
I answer lots of post regarding cichlid compatibility. Where most people say,yes it could work,I normally advise against it.
Cichlids can be trial and error and mistakes do get made but we can also use a little common sense with the most notorious of aggressive or strongly territorial of cichlids.
Dovii, red tiger motaguense, Trimac, umbees, and certain pike cichlids are just a few that I have advised against trying to build a community around.
Often the tanks are too small to meet each species territorial needs. To my way of thinking its best to look at more peaceful fish if a community is desired, unless the tank being used is big enough to cater for each species need for space.
In not trying to be argumentative I just feel a little compassion for all these fish that get bullied to death. I also feel there maybe a lot of young or inexperienced keepers viewing these posts and I feel it's right to point out the pitfalls rather than say,go ahead it could work.
Just trying to save headaches for the keeper and avoid unnecessary suffering for the fish.
I happen to be a fan of fahaka and yours is a lovely specimen. I would love to have one but can't bring myself to devote a tank to one fish. Therefore I choose something else.

What you say makes a great deal of sense and I admit to can I be rather cavalier with my attitude to new fish until I have become attached to them. I think you are right and that your cautious conservative approach does have a great deal of merit and should be raised with people new to the hobby.... however people get into this hobby for a miriade of reasons and as a result the cautious approach Isn't always right for them... I just provide a different, albiet slightly risky, approach. I respect your opinion and feel it would behove us to continue to give out advice but with deference to others concepts.

On a side note I would love to see some pictures of your tanks as your purist approach must lead to stunning results.

That's very decent of you to say.

I get the impression that I am not very well liked on this forum and have been called many unsavoury names in the past.
Sometimes people get told what they don't want to hear.Right or wrong they will do what they want and not what they are advised.
That's cool with me but I feel I you have experience in a matter then nothing wrong in voicing your opinion, please or offend.
I never hold a gun to anybodies head and say this is my view, I am the law do as I say.I do however advise to the best of my abilities to what I feel is right.
I believe that is the purpose of these forums.
After several views are put across the op can form a census of the opinions and come up with the best answer.Or in a lot of cases, do what they please anyway.

I hope we can put our difference of opinion aside and carry on enjoying each others post's. I love the look of your tank and as I have already said, the fahaka is beautiful. It's just some of the risk taking I am not so fond of.
As you said we all enter the hobby from a different perspective and we are all entitled to do just that,as we are all entitled to our own opinions.
No hard feelings.
