Hey MFK, just got a small 3 inch silver Arowana 3 days ago, just got him home today and settled into a 55 gal tank nicely. im just curious what to do for prevention of drop eye, or down eye.
i've heard and read many things such as low fat diet, which is what i will be putting him on, its the "chiclid Staple" floating pellets which he eats with ease. crude fat is min 3% and crude protein is 35%. im wonderin if this would be okay as his main diet.
also curious if putting floating plants or toys in will help put his focus on whats above instead of below. i think these fish are beautiful and just want to keep it looking perfect. as for tank size, i will get him a larger tank as he needs it. for now he seems happy swimming in his tank. :)
so please, the more feedback the better, just looking for some good tips on the species!

There are a lot of theories and no real ways to prevent drop eye. Can always go for diff species of are are less susceptible to DE but any big silver I've seen 30"+ has DE so some extent

Awesome! I love Silvers :) those pellets seem fine as a staple but once he gets larger incorporate frozen foods into his diet like Prawns, Tilapia, and Silver Sides. Also once he grows a bit more i would either switch him over to Carnisticks or NLS Pellets. But for now you could also feed crickets say once a week as a nutritious treat. They are very cheap at places like Pet-smart. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A TIGHT FITTING LID ON YOUR TANK WITH NO GAPS OTHER WISE YOUR AROWANA WILL PROBABLY JUMP OUT. Drop eye is pretty much inevitable with Silvers. Sooner or later it happens to pretty much all of them. I have heard of people putting ping pong balls in their tank for their Arowana and I heard keeping a little light on in the tank at night helps them be less skittish and more comfortable. He will need a very large tank soon! That 55 won't last long ;)

thanks, i've heard of the ping pong as well, my boyfriend had an 18 inch silver and it had drop eye in one eye but a couple weeks after he got it, it somehow fixed itself. me and him were thinking it could be the bigger tank he was in from the tank the guy had him in before.
as for the lid its tight and no holes. i've had fish jump out when i didnt have a lid and wasnt very happy to find them dead on the floor in the morning. i will deffinatly get him some crickets this week or next.

From the information I have gathered some Aros get Drop-eye in nature, so just except that it may happen. Making sure the fish is comfortable and healthy, should be you main concern. The 55 gallon tank it is in will not be large enough sooner then you think, so you really do need to look into at least a 125 gallon tank ( members on MFK, will say the tank must be 180 plus, but 125 will work ). If you need more time, you can slow the growth rate down by keeping the temp. low, but do not take the temp. lower then 70F degrees, it will develop Ick. good luck.

thank you, im aware of their very very fast growth rate, i am prepared to get a bigger tank or find him a new home. my main goal is to make sure my fiah are happy and healthy, the same goes for all my other pets. i consider fish my "water babies" and my other furry pets my "fur babies" Lol. im a girl so i have a "motherly protectiveness" of all my pets. im planning to get him a bigger tank or re-home him by the time he reaches around 7 or 8 inches. i appreciate the feedback :)

That could be very soon on average they grow about an inch a month but sometimes faster.

well i at least have a couple months to find a bigger tank. i'd better get looking i guess ;)

Other theories are they get head trauma from banging against the bottom of the lids. So you need to minimize them spazzing out and jumping. My silver always hated the color purple or red. Anytime someone walks by with a red or purple shirt they would spaz out.

Really eh? good to know i'll have to pay close attention to how it reacts to everything, he's just a little guy right now, suprisingly not alot of things seem to make him stressed or freak out, then again the most i've done is put my hand in the tank lol. but he doesnt get phased when im messing around near the tank. my tank is in my room also so im in and out of it quite a bit during the day.
