sucked into the silvers!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
85 might be a tad bit high but it should be fine, especially for a young fish. As it grows you could lower it to 82 and it would be fine but either way it should be alright. Just keep an eye on it. If it seems like its breathing hard, bump it down a few degrees and see if it improves.

To be honest, I've never heard of silvers recovering from DE although if it was a mild case I don't see why it isn't possible.

okay i'll have to keep an eye on that too.
the DE correction seemed odd to both of us, it was mild tho. so DE is an injury? i've been told its a muscle problem, and that their eyes get lazy being in a tank off the groung and looking below them instead of above, which can also make sence for being in ponds, ponds are lower and the aro wouldnt have much to look down for. just a thought. either way the larger the habitat the better i guess. i'd love to have an arowana pond but the climate here would freeze their little butts off :p

Indoor ponds are much much cheaper than tanks!

The reason why they get it is because they are inbreds and it's a genetic defect. Some are lucky to not have it and majority do get it. I've had many Arowanas and only my silvers had um. But I only had one that had DE. So it's luck of the draw. But in either case they are still beautiful fish and one of my favorites

If he is alone in a 55 gallon he will be fine for about a month if fed the proper diet. At my job we got in a 2-3 inch Silver arowana about 5-6 months ago... and now he is pushing about 10 inches. Don't underestimate how fast these guys will grow. It's not a matter if it WILL work because chances are that it will survive in a smaller tank but would you want to live in a room that was 6 feet high when you were 5 foot tall+ For now the pellets you are feeding are pretty good. Food sticks work if you could get your hands on that. Would be a great idea to feed him some crickets/meal worms if you could get your hands on them. If you are actually going to upgrade a tank for him I wouldn't even waste money on a 125... and just get your hands on a 180. The 6 foot length of a 180/125 is great but you are going to want the 24 inch depth of a 180 for him to turn not the 18 inch of a 125. And i'm sure everyone warned you about how much they jump and how they could fit through the smallest of cracks... so make sure the lid is on tight and be careful during water changes because I've had a few of mine jump out right in front of me! Enjoy your silver! they are beautiful fish and by far one of my favorites!

thank you, i guess i will re-home him then, because i dont have room for a 180 gal, or the money to buy all new pumps and heaters atm. :( im not trying to contradict what you're saying, but will the aro not be okay in my tank when its like 8 inches? my tank is 48x13x18 i'd just hate to see him go to a bad home and i JUST got him. its not like i have a 20 incher in a 55g. im not trying to offend anyone by keeping a 2 inch arowana in a 55g tank. its not his permanent home, im aware i will have to rehome him. im not making him live in the 55g for life.
i am getting him crickets this weekend, so far hes eaten everything i've given him without any problems. im taking care of him as best i can. :nilly:

Your not offending anyone. this is why the forum is here. to further knowledge people to have them keep fishes to the best of their abilities :p
but yeah a 55 gallon for him at 8 inches is to small. It's not a matter of will it work because he will live in it... it just isn't right for him. it will stress him out, he won't be able to swim as much as he should and it will stress him out.

okay, so when should i re-home him? asap? or until he first shows signs of stress?
trust me if i could get him a 300g tank i would.
its just disheartening when i've gotten alot of crap about it today and i've only been asking for advice and not a lecture. im only 18 and i've realy only had this as a hobby for a year or so. i love fish especaily arowanas and i couldnt help but pick one up last week when i saw them in the small tank all packed together in a store. i thought i was doing some good but now it seems like im hurting the poor fish more. he's a perfect fish. i'd give it to my boyfriend for his 150g but his tiger fish would kill it lol
