How long could a silver be kept in a 55?
From the information I have gathered some Aros get Drop-eye in nature, so just except that it may happen. Making sure the fish is comfortable and healthy, should be you main concern. The 55 gallon tank it is in will not be large enough sooner then you think, so you really do need to look into at least a 125 gallon tank ( members on MFK, will say the tank must be 180 plus, but 125 will work ). If you need more time, you can slow the growth rate down by keeping the temp. low, but do not take the temp. lower then 70F degrees, it will develop Ick. good luck.

i dont see the harm in keeping it in a 55 for a couple months when its this small....?
There is no harm in that. It is the 125 gallon comment that is controversial. Most people here agree that a 30 inch fish doesn't remotely belong in a tank that is 18 inches wide. Also, a lower temp lowers the immune system of the fish making them more likely to get ick. Ick is a parasite. If there is no ick in your system, you could freeze them to death before they get ich. But what do I know? I'm not young enough to know everything.
Also, it seems as though the most widely accepted theory(but still a theory), is that aros in captivity get drop eye as a result of trauma from running into the sides of the tanks/lids. Considering how many fish die due to jumping out of the tank, it seems to be the most likely. Again, it hasn't been proven but considering how fish kept in ponds seem to have much lower rates of DE and it is rather rare in the wild, there is a high correlation between fish in kept in aquariums and fish that develop DE.
okay, well yeah that sounds dumb it would hardly have room to move around.thats how im judging on when to rehome my arowana, my tank is 13" wide, so when my aro reaches about 12 i'll rehome him. unless he shows signs of stress before that then i'll rehome him sooner. or if i can find a bigger tank and convince my rents to let me put it in their house lol
okay well thanks for telling me that, his temp is set at 85 and i dont plan on dropping it. that makes alot of sence about the DE though because my boyfriend had a silver arowana and it had drop eye when he got it but after having it in his 150gal for a few weeks it corrected itself and i think it was in a much smaller tank the guy had it in before.
There is no problem with that. The fish will be fine at that size. I'd say you've got a few solid months(6+). People love to exaggerate and claim the fish will outgrow it in 2 days. Just don't get too attached and be prepared to let it go. Also, I've seen people use floating plants to calm their aros down and it seems to work. If you don't mind the look, some duckweed or the like might not be a bad idea.
