Suggestions for 100 gallon

Just to recap:

Consensus seems to be no more than 2 species of cichlid in the tank. A school of Columbian tetras (10-12) should be fine.

There seems to be some disagreement on having the geos with the single severum. Some of the other eartheater options are intriguing, but geos would be my preference. For those who have advised against them, is there a particular reason (i.e. temperament, care requirements, tank size)?

If you think there are other good options to pair with the severum, I'm definitely interested to hear them.

I think they looks best over a dark substrate.
The background will have an effect too- my male looks best over a natural brown tannish background

If staying with the Geos, I would stick with one of the two smaller Sevs ... Rotkeil or Turquoise. More due to tank space than anything.

Also, Orangehead Tapajos Geos are one of the few fish I've seen that look much better over a lighter substrate, from the pics I've seen I wouldn't want to keep them over a dark one.

That's good to know! I think I was under the impression that dark substrate was the way to go due an Aquarium Co-op vid where some grow outs were on black sand. I thought they looked pretty good, but after looking at some more vids, I think you're right.

I'll agree geos look good over light substrate. I just switched to a off white sand and it made my brasiliensis's colors pop

I think most fish do look better, especially ones that already have darker tones like a brasilliensis. But I was just talking about the Orangehead Tapajos species specificly in this case. It's just one were the subtle colors seem to get lost with the darker base color. Bolivian rams are another exception. Of course, that can be a personal opinion and not everyone will agree. Just my two cents.

Really great stuff, guys. Appreciate the help! I think I'm learning towards the following two combinations:

Option 1:

-1 red spotted severum
- EBA
- 10-12 Columbian tetras
- small group of pictus cats (3-4?)

Option 2:

-1 rotkiel severum
-4 Geos
-10-12 Columbian tetras

Option 1 would probably be a blacked out tank and option 2 would be natural sand with a black background. Do you think I'm limiting myself too much on the tetra species? Option 2 in particular seems like a lot of red. Would lemon tetras work just as well? Something else?
