sump for eight 100Gals and six 55Gals

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i was running the lines today(water and power) and wondering what the set up would be to start buying parts.
trying to find out what i could fit before i buy the tanks.
i was thinking that until i know what im fitting i dunno how to fit the sump.

ok so can i build a stand to hold a 100 gallon high up and run the sump under it for a few tanks then have the other sump against the far wall under another row of 100s?
im really just having a problem fitting all the tanks in here with the sump in a good spot.

i have about 80" to play with height wise and like 15 feet by 40

grr still nervous of running all these tanks of the sump

ok so i think im going to make a pond type thing 2 foot by 6 foot under the tanks and use it as a sump is this a good idea?
posting pics later today
would fifteen inches be enough height for the sump?

well stands are almost done, dr joe where are you! lol

really though im scared about starting this wooden pond/sump that would be 15 inches deep untill i know it is a good idea/bad idea etc

thanks all!

also another good idea would be to have several hob filters ready just in case there is a out break and have shut off valves for each tank, which means your going to have to be constantly looking at your tanks for any illness or diseases. and keep the media that youd use for the hob in the sump for when they arent in use to help keep the bacteria on them. and i would also recommend a system that automatically changes the water cuz other wise its going to be a pita to try and clean the tanks since they would be all hooked together heck sometimes its a pain in the arse with just one tank on a sump. and then gravel vac every so often

You have a picture of or link to this 'pond type thing'?
I'm trying to over come similar issue. If I can't figure out a way, I might just end up pumping from the lower tanks to the upper tanks, then upper tanks to the sump, and from the sump, back to all the tanks. Or, I can dig myself a couple 4 ft deep holes around the corner of the house and build a 'sump' using 30+ gallon barrels. But then I'll have to get a big pool type pump to suck the water out and back to the tanks from underground. Electricity cost to run a pump like that 24x7 will most likely ending up with my wife either kill the fishes and/or me.

thanks andy1234 !
yea im going to have shut off valves and this "pond" would only be the sump for six - eight 55 gals. been so busy but want to upload pics of how it would be set up.

above poster im going through the same thing i wanted to use barrels at 1st but my friend said it might be easier having it lay as a rectangle cuz it would be UNDER all the said tanks so i can feed them with gravity.

well here is the stand for two 55's testing it to see how it fit before i make 3 more lol.
so could i fit the sump underneath the tanks if i have 15 inches?

and the last shot it the wall that im trying to fit the sump against im planning on having a few seperate sumps per two tanks on that wall.

I think if you are going to breed and raise fish, your best bet would be to go with sponges and a blower. Makes everything independent and no chance to spread and infect all the tanks. You can still use a sump and central system to do water changes, just have the old water run to a drain outside, and run new water into them all at the same time. Use this only for maintenance and not filtration, use the sponges as you main BB filter. A blower and air is a lot cheaper than a 1/2 hp or larger main system pump.
