Sump question

If you have a full planted tank with nitrate reducing plants does that take away the need for gravel vacing?

I don't have a full planted tank, but just some pothos in my sump. Even if the tank was full planted and I had 0 nitrate, I would still need to vacuum the sand to remove the unearthly amount of crap my Pleco produces.
