sump vs. Fx5

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ya i figured so, would it be the pump or the overflow that is noisy?

if you keep the water level right at the bottom of the bins so there is no splash it is not really noisey(might hear a slight trickling sound)the bins are sitting on a mlk crate and the crate just sits in the rubbermaid, pumping just pulls apart at the top of the binns for easy maintenance, and of course the drawers open also for ease of maintenance,i also have a fluval fx5 on this tank as well just to run chemical filtration(a gallon or so of purigen)the sump beats the fluval in biological filtration hands down.

ok thanx i am excited i just need 2 get supplies now
what does everyone reccomend for biological filtration i am thinking about getting a 5 gallon bucket of bioballs

pot scrubbies are cheaper and you can get alot more for your money,i also you bio bales(white noodle looking stuff)

I have 5 Wet/Drys and 2 FX5s. I will be the minority here, but I much prefer the FX5 for water clarity.

ok ya I PMed zenzo and Ima get some scrubbies soon if I ever get a break from school :(

just add a micron filter pad to the wet dry and the clarity is just as good i have both and i cant tell the difference in clarity

I thought about a filter sock, but I decided that it would be more maintainence and I will sacrifice some clarity for a higher flow rate

bad thing about wet/dry is that the mechanical filtration lacks where biological filtration is far superior. I would do a canister and a wet/dry at the same time. Or maybe 1 or 2 powerheads to keep water flowing.

ok but if i am overstocked biological filtration is what i need right?
