A rubbermaid = the sump.

The overflow = either buy one (~$100), DIY PVC, or a plastic kool aid pitcher (with a handle) and some tubing

The media baskets = a 3 drawer rubbermaid container with holes in each layer

The media = scrubbies, army men, bio balls, whaterver

You need to buy a pump.
how do i make a DIY overflow?
and where can i get those media baskets

check out the diy forum on this site, there is a sticky. As far as the baskets you can make them out of a 5 g bucket cut in half or use eggcrate from Lowes. I made little partitions out of eggcrate on the bottom of my rubbermaid mainly to separate the pump from the bioballs. I put 10 gallons in the bottom of mine

oh thanks i forgot about the sticky!
also should i use silicone to make the eggcrate into partitions
and what do you mean by "I put 10 gallons in the bottom of mine"

I just cut a piece of eggcrate to fit vertically and didnt support it with silicone or anything,,just made sure it was snug. 10 g of bioballs,,a lot of people use scrubbies but I couldnt find any around here.

Ok thx

lol, i have a 60 gallon sump + fx5 on a single 180.. is that wrong??

No, you just don't need the Fx5. :) soooo.... Hand it over!

For the money I could have spent on an FX5, I built my stand and my sump (including piping and pump) and had money left over to buy a heater. Don't get me wrong, the FX5 is a fantastic filter, but I just can't justify spending that kind of money when I can build a sump for a fraction of the cost.

Plus, if my pump ever dies I can just throw in any old pump that's rated for the flow I want at the head height required. Hell, I have enough room for 4 or 5 pumps!!!! Let's see you do that with the FX5 :P

would a 20 gallon rubbermaid be worth it for a 125 gallon tank?
