swimming pool filter?

I wouldn't use that filter as your main filter on your tank. The problem is that I don't think there would be enough space for the biological bacteria in that second chamber and lets say you fill that chamber up with bio-media, how are you going to prevent the debris from just flowing back into your tank. What you got there is basically a diatom filter, it's fine for a swimming pool but you would be spending lots of time cleaning it, if you use it as the main filter for your tank.

i'm sure it will work, but the real questions are: how effective is it? (the ad states nothing about the filter's gallons per hour rating.) how many gallons was the pool that this filter was set up on? is the filter powerful enough to service your tank? will you need a second filter, along with the pool filter?

yah i'm not sure how big the pool was. probably 3 feet high. and 10 or 12 feet in diameter .. alot bigger then any aquarium i could fit in my room. not sure how many gallons that would be but i could always figure out. and so far i just havent been able to see what differene there is between this filter and my fluval 404 except this is bigger etc. still sucks water in one end through one empty chamber. down through the bottom (not sure whats in the bottom as i'm trying to get it open as we speak) and then another chamber which i could take the white filter thing thats in teh pic out and stuff so three empty seperate chambers. .. which im sure could somehow be set up to run the same way as a canister filter

it would probably work well enough for the mech filtration, dont think it would do anything for you on the bio side.

The difference between the pool filter and your fluval is that, your pool filter is designed for different media. In the picture of the filter I only see 2 chambers, the first one is the strainer so leaves don't clog up the motor and the second chamber is the mechanical filter, specifically a micron filter. The micron filter is designed to push water through it and then the clean water is sent up through the middle. On your fluval, the water is forced through the entire filter chamber, it goes down the side of the media baskets and then is forced up through the middle. You would have to make some basket system so you could have the same thing work in your pool filter. One other thing to think about as in regards to the pool size and your tank, the pool doesn't have a constant supply of waste being added to it and it also has the added benefit of having chlorine in the water that would help to kill bacteria and break down debris that gets in the pool. The filter will work, but I don't think it would be safe for fish in the long run.

no? i'm honestly not that fermilliar as to how filters work .. pump sucks in water. puts it through sponges. puts it through media then bring it back out to the tank. as far as i can see this filter would be the exact same thing. has anyone tried this before or what?

well that white circle filter on the right is removable so that would be an ampty chamber and the chamber you mentioned about the leaves .. couldnt that be filled with sponges to take care of that? and ya the chamber with the motor probably doesnt have enough room to do anything with. im just looking for a way to work around filtration on my new tank. i will have to buy another canister filter which arent cheap (and don't everrrr get sold used around here) or spend a bundle to build a w/d (as the cheapest i can get a 33+ gallon tank around here for used is around $180+) so one again doesnt save me much money. this pool filter mighten work but i noticed it and it immediatly made me wonder if this would work so i could spend more money on a tank itself

alright .. just filled the bathtub half way up and turned the filter on to try it out and make sure it even works. which it does. it is pretty powerful. sucks alot of water and fast. could easily put that entire bathtub of water through it in maybe 5 mins. i dunno. hard to judge but it is powerfulll. not sure if it would be too powerful for an aquarium or not. might be. creats a pretty powerful current. and only other thing is its not super loud but its not silent either. if it was in a stand and somehow minorly sound deadened it would be fine for sound. so anyone think there is a way to make it work?

You can rent a truck from Home Depot for like $20 for 2 hours. I think you might have to buy a 2x4 too.

Uhaul is around 20 for a whole day with a pickup truck but you have to watch the mileage. Even if your uhaul place doesn't have a pickup they'll rent you one of the bigger trucks for the pickup price if its only for 1 day.

Everyone has access to a truck.

i had thought about this but wasnt sure exactly who to call around where i live that would do this. the reason it is so expensive with the otehr companies is where i live the roads aren't the best .. the highway it would be going over isnt nice straight and smooth like the roads in the mainland canada or like the states. the tch here is half bumpy with pot holes etc and as soon as that tank gets a bump it will most likely shatter.
