swimming pool filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the only thing that comes to my mind that may be a red flag would be how loud the filter is. is it going to be very disruptive in the house?

the tank is in my bedroom so that was my main worry also. i tried it out and no it's not silent by any means but its not loud either. like if i had in inside a stand that possibly had a bit of sound deadening somehow done in it it would be pretty silent.

i found a page on the net that has one of these filters for sale and a picture and all so you can see what i'm talking about.

what you guys think? is there a reason why it actually shouldn't be used?

I'm sure it would work, not sure how effective it could be but you can always tinker with the media set up. One thing to consider is if the motor is rated to run 24/7, probably isn't and this could lead to the motor burning out

good point. never thought about the motor 24/7 thing. its not overly loud but it is veryyy powerful flow. if i put the output at the top of a 24" high tank it would deffinatly be enough to blow away sand at the bottom of the tank. i think the suction and out flow might be to much for fish to handle. might just have to stick to canisters and maybe keep an eye open for a tank to use as a sump. any idea what size tank would be ideal for a 150-180 gallon tank?

You can always soften the flow by adding sponges or something in front of the flow to block it. IMO it should work.

Why not make your own sump and have it pull the water from the sump back into your tank? You'll have everything you need in the sump and then that pump for returning it to your tank. With the 125 I just got it came with two sumps and has a hole cut out of the side by the bottom. Perfect for that idea since it's not submersible. You can just sit the pool pump next to the sump with pvc pipe connecting it.

Realize the flow will also be less then what you seen in the tub because of the increased head pressure of putting it on an elevated fish tank.

i had thought about this but wasnt sure exactly who to call around where i live that would do this. the reason it is so expensive with the otehr companies is where i live the roads aren't the best .. the highway it would be going over isnt nice straight and smooth like the roads in the mainland canada or like the states. the tch here is half bumpy with pot holes etc and as soon as that tank gets a bump it will most likely shatter.

Take the mattress of your bed and put it on the bottom of the truck. Wrap the tank in a moving blanket and use tie down to hold it in place. That should prevent it from breaking.

Pool pumps aren´t made to run 24/7. The power consumption will also most likely be uneconomical compared to what the tank will need relative to pumping capacity. I´ve installed such systems on tanks before but only on systems above 1000 gal cause they´re uneconomical on smaller systems. I´d look for a filter/pump combo better tailored to your needs.
