I was curious about the dorsal fin .. I thought featherfins had taller dorsal fins, whereas my synos is pretty short.

30 gallons is too little for 2. They are rather long lived as well. I have mine for 8 years now and he was an adult when I got him.

I must admit that I've learnt more here in the past couple of days .... then I did since I first adopted/rescued this fish and tank 3 yrs ago. I never would've guess syno Ocellifer, my best guess was the syno Nigrita. Thanks again to Thebiggerthebetter ... for posting that chart for me. I found it quite enlightening.
Pretzelman and/or Ecoli ... any chance of you guys posting a pic of your syno, I'd sure love to see a pic of another mature. All the photos I've looked at seem to be juveniles, and its leaving me with a little "but" if you know what I mean.
Ecoli thanks for re-emphasizing about "30 gallons is too small for 2", completely understood that from earlier, but also understand how some people ignore advice.

It appears S. ocellifer is an agreeable ID. Moreover, it is a riverine, solitary syno that is territorial.

There is a plethora of other data/care sheets on the net - try Scotcat, SeriouslyFish, LiveAquaria, FishBase, Catalog of Fishes, Wikipedia, etc. etc. Finally, after learning firmly what an ocellifer looks like and its variations, you can google the Scientific name and click on images - you will have plenty to behold.

That's the Duke. I adopted him a couple of years agony from a mean ass cichlid tank. His dorsal fin has seen better days and his fin (caudal?)on the right side is in worse shape. He is definitely my favorite fish. Is say he is a solid 9" long not sure how old he is but over 10yrs at least. He will swim upside down for me and eat brine shrimp out of my hand. Love that fish.
