How bad is it really to keep a fancy goldfish in a tank with tropicals? Seems like anyone who mentions they mix goldfish with other fish gets immediately flamed on any fish board.:banhim:

But come on, I've done it and I know other people who do it. Like the feeder fish that just never got eaten and just becomes part of the community. Never had a problem with it, goldfish seemed fine. Maybe it's because the modern varieties have been bred to be so unlike a wild goldfish that it doesn't really matter anymore if they live full time in a 76 degree tank. What do you think?

I've been cursed with this as well. I have 2 "feeders" that are now 6"+ and don't know what to do with them. I suppose I could feed them to my newly aquired Gulper Cat, but am strangely attached to them. lol.

There is nothing wrong with it and some fancy goldfish even REQUIRE tropical temperatures. I will and HAVE done it. I don't think there is anything wrong with it at all. Its all about wether or not the fish get along.

it can work, but the problem comes form the tank being too small for the full grown goldfish and the tropical fish, or the temp being way to high for the gold fish, and there aren't any goldfish that require tropical temperatures.

Just remember, its not weather you can keep it alive in a different environment, it's weather they will be healthy.

See sig....

Sounds like it's more common than we "admit" lol

When I was younger, I had 2 goldfish that grew up in a community tank. They were two of my favorite fish. I see nothing wrong with it - Basically all they do is eat and poop a lot, but beyond that, I don't see anything else wrong with it. They actually make excellent pets, and over time, they do become monster fish in their own right :)

I was told that there are a couple speices that maybe not "require" but prefer tropical temperatures.

I think a few of the outlandish varieties (not species) in the Orient are more delicate and need warmer water Probably to help avoid intenstinal problems.

But a good old comet is a gorgeous sight when happy and thriving.
As for temps - they love warm water - they go on crazy growth spurts, eat a lot, poop a lot, swim all over the tank and so on. I could go on all day about this. Right now my collection only allows for a baby golfball pearlscale goldfish housed with my two Raiamas.
