tank almost crashed.. please advices!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It seems my 50% weekly water change might cause this? It is written there that excessive water change may caused old tank syndrom

That's wrong. Lack of water changes/insufficient water changes for the tank bioload cause old tank syndrom. 50% weekly is not an excessive water change. Its a minimum must.

Hello; The nice thing is we each get to run our tanks any way we wish. Good luck and I hope you find a path to a healthy tank.

I need guidance to be a better fish keeper from the well experienced like you tho.. sometimes experience beats the theory

Aarrghhhhhh...

Why It is so complicated..
Did my weekly WC, with 50%
Monitored everything
Been havin 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite
Just 80-100nitrate.. tap water contains 40ppm nitrate

I dont overfeed
I feed one day then fast the next day
I feed what they can eat within 5-10min
99% sure no left over food
I dont overstock
I scoop all the waste that i can see.. everytime

I am getting the TDS meter soon to see what the hell the actual problem is..

You need to see how the TDS fluctuates between water changes. It will give you your answer and help maintain the TDS stable via enough water changes. The crushed coral may help some stabilise things, especially if your well water has low alkalinity.
You may not consider your tank overstocked, but you've got large fish that are heavy producers of waste and its the equivalent of stocking a small tank with a bunch of livebearers. My 240G pond has 30-40 fish, the smallest are 6 harlequin rasboras, next biggest 9 denison barbs and the largest two of the clown loaches, one around 8inch, the other 9inch. I consider my tank fully stocked right now.....For 40G more water you've got arowana, oscars, etc..You just need to work harder to maintain such a tank..Its a choice we make...

Hello; Next time you feed watch the gill covers of the fish. My guess is as the fish eat small bits will be seen exiting the gill cover. These small bits are common and will wind up in the filter.

If I recall correctly your setup does not have live plants, you scrub out any algae that grows each day, and you do not have any snails.

The live plants and even some algae can help with water quality. Some can take up ammonia directly. I think all will take up nitrates.

Snails will consume any food bits and other organic debris. My thinking being that having the snails eat it is better than having it rot.

I really would love to have plants.. but my oscars will destroy it and it is a lot of maintanace with havin plants.. snails? It looks awful :/

Hello; We all are keeping fish in a tiny fraction of the amount of water they would live in in the wild. Even those with large tanks such as yours. You have a large tank but also large fish which makes for a high stocking density.

2 hours has passed.. total 3 hours after i put the corals.. ph is slowly climbing, and now is at 5.9 from initially 5.5, 3 hours ago

Will corals get exhausted, so it stops pump my ph up?.. at what ph it will stabilizes? Or it will keep rising and rising to the point i have to remove it from the system?

It should stabilize at some point until you do your next wc, but still keep monitoring.
