its not the plastic of the heater that is breaking the glass, its the shock wave pushing the water. the way the plastic breaks has little to do with the destruction.

Doubtful at best, if it was a shockwave there would have been more broken glass and it wouldn't have shot across the room (the glass that is). There is an obvious point of impact, generally a shockwave would not leave such a distinct feature and there would have been a lot more destruction.

It is not out of the realm of possibilities that the heater caused this. If it did explode I am sure it started to expand first (since its plastic), which would cause the heater to pop out of the suction cup holders. If that is the case, and the heater exploded, it could have most certainly hit the POI as shown in a previous post. As to the above poster, anything hitting glass hard enough will break it, even plastic. So the placement of the suctions cups is actually irrelevant to anything IMO.

Now, since it is plastic and had to expand before it "exploded" that could have caused an increase in pressure within the heater, causing the explosion for lack of a better word, which would cause the heater to smash into the glass.

I fully support the OP's story for the simple fact that it is obviously not the first time this has happened to someone. If this was the one and only case, I would be skeptical too. But, this even happened to another poster on this thread, down to the exploding portion.

I second the placement of suction cup being irrelevant. My friend's stealth's side started to expand like it was boiling plastic outwards. He caught it in time and replaced it from petsmart. I've seen it with my eyes as well (my friend's stealth before replacement)

Did ya take pictures? or better do you still have it?

I got a cold feet from reading so many story like this..
i put my heater at the bottom side of my tank, if it explod i can't imagine.
but my heater rarely on power, cos i'm at tropic climate.

something i learn from this thread, i think using a more (or even most) expensive heater, will make it very worth!! since the majority of our fish is monster, or rare and also got a high price tag.
