Tank crash?

Pour water over the U tube where it plugs into the impeller housing.

I have done that and should I put the wheel in

You may have unseated the impeller. Take it out anyway to check if there is any crud buildup in the impeller housing. Also you could have unseated the U tube and it is sucking in air. See if it is all the way down.

You can put the wheel on anytime.

I have a feeling that you missed post #29. It has the real solution to your problems.

I tested for chlorine and there was none, how do I test for hydrogen sulfide thanks for reminding me

Yes, put the wheel in! It will give you some bio-filtration and drasticly cut down on the ammonia level after it establishes in a few weeks. You could add a Hydro sponge filter to the tank for more bio area. I am not a fan of those odd shaped tanks if you could get a canaster like a Fuval 205 it would help while still keeping your bio wheel running also. Well water didn't even cross my mind, being from Hudson Co. New Jersey we haven't seen a well for a hunderd years. Good call
