You may have unseated the impeller. Take it out anyway to check if there is any crud buildup in the impeller housing. Also you could have unseated the U tube and it is sucking in air. See if it is all the way down.

You can put the wheel on anytime.

I have a feeling that you missed post #29. It has the real solution to your problems.
 
Yes, put the wheel in! It will give you some bio-filtration and drasticly cut down on the ammonia level after it establishes in a few weeks. You could add a Hydro sponge filter to the tank for more bio area. I am not a fan of those odd shaped tanks if you could get a canaster like a Fuval 205 it would help while still keeping your bio wheel running also. Well water didn't even cross my mind, being from Hudson Co. New Jersey we haven't seen a well for a hunderd years. Good call:ROFL:
