Tank cycle question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well i must apologize and admit i may have been wrong. That's the advice my lfs gave me and they're pretty reliable, and what i remember from years ago when i kept several tanks. But after some research it seems most sources agree with azedenkae these days.

No probs at all, it is a common misconception after all, spawned from assumptions from wayyyy back when people don't have the same understanding of aquariums as they do now. Not your fault at all, because yeah, still a lot of even reliable sources do not know this.

I don't know how long you have to return it but maybe hold onto it a few days and keep testing your parameters to make sure there's no surprises. But from what you've posted i think you're probably good without it, just gotta wait it out.

Looks like PH is 7.6 at least and high range PH is 8.8

Whew, your pH is very high. Sorry, I should have asked for your pH before my recommendations re: the bottled bac product. Fritz does not work as well when pH is that high: https://fritzaquatics.com/products/fritzzyme-turbostart-700-freshwater. With that said, it is not like it harmed anything either.

Either way, very curious about the increase in ammonia. Was your pH always this high? Or was it lower before?

No worries. I did use the entire bottle which they said could be used 5x recommended dosage. It came out to be about 4x dosage. Not sure if that did anything. But to be honest I didn’t check PH before this. I do know that Milwaukee has very hard water and that surrounding areas all use a water softener. Milwaukee does not but I imagine it’s still pretty hard. I will have a wild dwarf flag cichlid coming from Kevin at TUIC I’m a little nervous that with it being this high that it won’t survive?

When the ph test hits 7.6 thats the top of that scale, so then you test the high range like you did on your tank to see high much higher than 7.6 it is. Sorry I don't know much about that cichlid, hopefully others here can steer you .
