Tank for Frank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tomorow is the big moving day. got 9 guys to put it on the trailer. only have 6 to push it off. I looked up psf weight of plexiglass. the tank has close to 120 square feet. if I did my multiplication right, this puts it at 600-700 pounds dry. (ouch).

All went well with moving. We did have to move the 120 gallon aquarium that Frank the Pacu is in now. He was none too happy at only having enough water to cover his fins. SO, he trashed the plants to let me know. As I type this, the kids are playing in the new tank , making sure its an ok place for Frank to live. Now I have to make a stand, and put in a wood beam and pole down stairs to hold the weight.

I was going to use canister filters, but I'm going to be able to get to 3 sides of the tank so I'm really contemplating a sump with lots and lots of filters.

since there is no question, what do you want?

are you asking if you'd be better off building a tank instead of buying this acrylic tank?
I'd say yes. a well cared for pacu gets big, fast. acrylic tanks are expensive and I'd say you're better off putting the money towards the 500G-600G you'll need.

and you might want to get that drip looked at by a plumber, or doctor, depending on where it's coming from.

it is 560 gallon!-)

One of my fav fish. Only just seen ure thread so look forward to seeing him in the tank. Ive kept two in my time sadly lost the first to a power cut then my next grew him up to 30inches. Was forced to sell him. Would like to get another but havent the space now to house one. will be nice to see a pacu in a tank that they should be housed in. All the best

Nice tank!

Since the bottom is already drilled, I would just run a bead filter like an Ultima or a W Lim. All you would have to do is turn a valve to backwash the media while you simultaneously do a water change...much easier than trying to keep filter socks clean. If you build the stand tall enough, you can place it under the stand. Otherwise you can have the filter sit next to the tank and build some sort of enclosure if you'd like it to look a bit more finished.

Reinforcing the floors is definitely a good idea. The setup will weigh over 5,000lbs.

Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Edit: I hate to say it, but unless Frank is stunted, he may outgrow this tank. Black Pacu can get to 3'+ and weigh 50lbs. Check out AnythingFish's Black Pacus...they were Monsters.

Pacumom knows her Pacu; thanks for the correction.

I figured that since they were so huge Ted's must have been blacks. I knew Red Bellies got big, but didn't know they got that big. That's crazy that Blacks will get even bigger.

Pacumom, based on his Profile pic, do you think E-Jay's is a Red or a Black?
