I guess that you would have entry at one end of the display tank and then an overflow at the other, as long as there is strong agitation of the surface then the new water would mix well with old?

What Toby said, the water comes in on the left side of the tank and if you look in the pics on the right side you will see two black pipes. The right one is the return and the left one is the overflow pipe.
