How long do u reckon I would have if I got rays at 6inch roughly before I'd need to upgrade?
Not a fan of growing monsters in their final home right from day 1personally as I feel many cats as they grow feel the territory getting smaller and smaller, but I do agree to owning the future tank in advance of needing it.
with regards sifters, geophagus or gymnogeophagus seem a good choice as would something like hoplo cats or indeed the smaller false girraffe cats.

Tend to see it with some of the smaller hemibagrus, levels of aggression increasing (sometimes hard to tell with them) but tolerance changes. Similar with Asian bumblebee cats and a number of synodontis. As well of course with a number of plecs. But all this can also be attributed to hormone changes as they mature.
But of course it does also depend on what is considered a forever home or big enough.
Big enough may still not be ideal.
Equally though, you would not want to raise a redtail from baby in one of victors 13x13 tanks , simply wouldn’t make it to adult if you had other fish, and even if you started all your monsters at the same time in the same tank, growth rates would make it impractical for some so you would need to have multiple forever sized tanks to then combine the fish in years to come, again impractical.
I don’t raise my monsters in the pond, that’s their final home having been through a number of tanks where I can boat better attention to their specific needs, BUT I agree, I already have the pond ready.
