tank requirments for festae

I know this, my point was that a festae should be over 10" in 2 years and it's not right to keep even a 10" fish divided in a 55gallon IMO. The problem is knowing when to upgrade. If you're going to upgrade your fish to a larger tank some day, why not just have them in that tank to begin with. They'll grow faster in a larger tank anyways.

there are many reasons.

. not everyone has the money to put up for a 6' tank

. they may recieve a larger tanks as a gift in the near future

. lack of space for a larger tank

. plan to rehome or trade out the fish when it gets too large for the current home.


there is no need to have a 300g tank for 1 fry measuring at .5". just because you have a 6' tank with one 4" fish in it, doesnt mean everyone needs to. people upgrade tanks all the time based on many factors.

and yes, im aware it CAN get over 10" in 2 years (possible but not likely at a average growth rate of .25-.5"/mo). you sould read between the lines.

The reason most people (at least me) add that you should keep it in a tank for adult size, is because many members that come here don't have the tank size to accomidate the adult fish. Kind of a reasurrance policy for myself.

and thats fine if it works for you, but thats not the case for everyone and you should take that into consideration before offering that advise

yeah 110 includes shipping but it is steep $40 for female 20 for male at 5.5 inch hows that for price

I would buy them locally for that price but not on top of shipping. If you were buying more fish, or going in on a group order it would be worth it.

i was think of ordering some wc festea from rapps how do you think they would do in a 90 for a male 75 for the female and possible try and spawn the fish in the 90 divided do you think this would work for awhile. i could build a plywood tank for the pair after they spawn. hoe is there aggression are they aboat the same is trimacs. this isa fish that i find striking. what aboat shiping in the winter?

that would work just fine. if you notice aggression separate them. but if they do pair up, you will be fine in a 75/90

I have seen many people buy baby fish that will get huge… put them in small tanks saying they will upgrade when necessary… and the fish dies in that small tank a year later…

I’ve grown out fish in many sized tanks… when I take a brood of fry and put half in a 20 gal and half in a 75 gal… the ones in the 75 gal grow faster… I’m not saying faster growth is the single sign of a healthy fish, but if you’re going to tickle either extreme, better to give them more space than needed than not enough…

How many times have you made plans which include spending a few hundred dollars… and something prevented it from happening in the time frame you hoped for…

I strongly suggest you get a tank large enough to house the adult fish and grow the fish out in that tank…

like i said, what works for you, might not work for everyone and vice versa. i do many things against the grain and have had GREAT results.

What do you do one month later with your 3" fish? And what about a month after that, and a month after that? Shuffle him around 15 times? I agree with you about growing your fish out. Right now I've got a giant gourami in a 55gallon, but I've got a 130 waiting for him when he's big enough to go in there with tankmates.

lol..The first tank I ever bought was a 55g for my spouse and quite some yrs ago. It turned out that I was the one to get the monster passion and not her. I have since received gifts from her when it comes to tanks but only in the form of permission to buy them.
Keeping a potentially large fish in a small tank whilst relying on the fact someone may buy you a larger tank later is just stupidity IMO
