Lol, its a shame, but its true. Most here know the proper size needed to care for one, yet they dont have one but keep one anyways.

^ I agree, I started out by asking this same question, I listened though and spent another 6 months asking other questions about everything.
I now have a minimum size tank for an RTG with a good drip filtter, (the design of which was emailed to me by an MFK poster), a proper heavy hood with lights and a 14inch RTG that's turning golder and getting bigger everyday.
Nice clean set up which I run according to the majority advice recived on here.

TBH I can't understand the "I'm buying a fish for a 50gal which is a grow out and I'll upgrade" metality.
I'm no expert but I've written it before and I'll write it again.
The fish should be the last thing on the list of "must buys"
This last paraghraph is in no way aimed at the OPdue to them not saying it but it's the usual. I can't believe how quick my RTG is growing and it's now only a 1/3 of it size.

Quite the "high and mighty" conversation you all have going. Do any of you even own a silver arowana? Or how about a tank that is bigger then 150 gallons.

Putting a 3" silver aro into a 300gallon tank is idiotic at best. It all boils down to personal opinion, when ya really look at it no home aquarium is big enough for an arowana.

Since we've got a tank size thread going already I'll ask in here...

I'm not going to have the space for an 8' tank. Realistically I could probably upgrade from the 170G I have to something with maybe a 6'x2.5' footprint, or more likely a 6x2 footprint. But I do have serious plans (this Spring) for an outdoor pond that's 12' diameter. Here's the question...if I decide not to dick around with heating this pond I'll have to bring the arowana in for winter, probably 3-4 months. Would I be a miserable bastard if I kept a silver aro in a 6x2 tank for 4 months out of the year, while the pond is too cold? Just curious if this is a no-go even as a temporary home...and if/when the aro gets to 3' in length or so I'd probably bite the bullet and heat the pond anyway.

You're right i dont own any silvers, all i got are asian. But yea, i got quite a few 300 gallon rubbermaid tubs down in the basement running and a few more 180 gallon tanks. Putting a 3" silver into a 300 gallon IS pretty retarded, but its alot smarter than having a 20" arowana in a 55 gallon.

depends how big they are, if they're under 2 feet, then no, if they're over 2 feet, then yea.

As i wrote I own an RTG (indonisian Golden, one of the smaller Asians)
My tank is 60x30x26 which is about 200gal, with a 70gal sump.
When you look at it no Tank is no home for any fish really if you're gonig to go down that road, that is unless the fish is farm bred and Knows no better than being cramped up with it's brothers and sisters, put in boxes and shipped world wide then sold in a plastic bag while drugged. Fish that would die in the wild if released due to not knowing what a preditor is and having at least 3rd generation natural instincts removed.
Buying a 3in silver is idiotic at best IMHO.
I personally don't think a 300 Gal tank is really the minimum for a silver, and i wouldn't recommend buying one either, but the fish should be the last thing to buy in a new arowana set up, be it silver or asian, don't you agree with that?
With all due respect Beders, your black died because you weren't prepared properly, I'm sorry to say it and I mean no disrespect but how many times have you read about silvers and blacks jumping through the "How did it get out of this hole!!!" threads then you made the same mistake. I also don't mean to be high and mighty, but you either learn by other peoples lessons or your own.

Explain why you believe buying a 3" silver is "idiotic at best". Any experience with this?

No I don't agree with putting a small fish in a huge tank. There is no need for it whatsoever. Not to mention how much harder it is to feed or medicate.

What does my black aro have to do with anything? Except for the fact that you just want to get a dig in. How was I not prepared? If you gonna bring up something at least get the facts straight, there was no hole the tank was sealed. I can only speculate as to how it got out.

Best thing for you is to comment on your experiences, which are few if any when dealing with arowana other then asians.

Putting small fish in a huge tank is much better than putting small fish in a big tank and then letting it grow and eventually watching it being cramped inside because you can't afford to buy a bigger tank ATM. This is what most people do. Thats why we recommend getting the full size tank first. Most people say they'll upgrade, but they dont take into account how fast these things grow. In the end, they can't afford a bigger tank so early and the fish gets cramped up.
