i have a 55 fresh water tank with 6 bichirs 2 dats 2 cl and a flag tail all are happy bright tank is spotless clean i have a under gravel filter with 2x 802 power heads (took a while to get the flow right as thats a huge abount of flow for a 55) and aqua via canaster filter rated for tanks up to 100 gal also to help in easier maintnance i have a internal filter with only mech media in it rated at 30 gals but it halls but and keeps all debri out of the water and is easy to clean out
with all this my water is clear can be but it always has a overly fishy smell that none of my freinds tanks (with less filtration per gallon) i changed the carbon 2 times this month and it holds about 2 pounds of it in my filter but the water always smells and at night it gets horible like a thick musk smell also the air stone boubles dont pop at the top they sit on the top and take up 2 10 seconds b4 poping seeming like there is a thickning in the very top of the water plz help!
is carbon even worht useing if i dont have to use it it would be so much easier and if i could just alter somthing in my tank to get this smell to stop plz let me know

About the layer on top, I dont know...

The smell might be "Pellets". I too get nasty smell of "????" when I over feed on Massivore Delight. I think its because there is not enough ventilation in the room.

Otherwise, beats me. G/L

You didn`t mention your cleaning routine.
How often do you change your water?
How often do you clean your gravel?
How often do you change/clean your filter media?
Most tanks will give some odor, but a really strong smell would get me to alter my cleaning schedule.

I would do a really good water change. Get into the gravel. If the bubbles are taking to long to pop there has to be something like a film on the surface. Maybe a protein skimmer might help. I dunno.
